If the New 52's version of Superman sucks to you, give the weekly, digital-first Adventures of Superman a look. I enjoyed the first two stories quite a bit. They are short done-in-one stories.
The first is a more traditional Superman story, while the second had the feel of a backup from an anniversary issue. It's a cute, nostalgic story by Jeff Lemire. His art doesn't suit Superman, but it worked for this story.
It was refreshing material and Superman even wore trunks. It's going to be collected and sold at comic shops, but it's laid out for digital, which is cool.
I've not tried the Legends of the Batman series, which has a similar format, but I might have to check it out.
