The truth behind the Original Art to Jack Kirby's X-Men 1

This story seems to be making the rounds through Comic Fandom. Always a contentious debate.

There has been lots of talk about what happened to the original art of comic creators working for Marvel and DC in the sixties and seventies. Especially

I'm curious where the original guys would have stolen it from.

Either Marvel's vault, which fits with the story location, or from someone who had already gotten it from Marvel as they were famous for handing out original art to advertisers throughout the 60's and 70's.

Sad when you think about how its been sold in pieces.

Interesting. The way the story is currently flowing, it certainly has the two boys with the artwork looking suspicious. I had never heard of that before. I'm surprised no one tried to contact the artist to find out if they had been taken from him or if they were still the property of Marvel comics. Typically as a contracted artist, anything you do is legally owned by the company your employed with.

Kirby had no ownership of early Marvel stuff.

The estate has tried to claim it, and I think they were eventually given something as a way to try and kill the issue.

Apparently Ditko kept a lot of his and used it for whatever he needed.

I read a story by a pro who said Ditko was using original Spider-Man pages to blot his ink brush on in the late 60s/early 70s. I think it was Nicolas Cuti, who was an editor at Charlton.

I believe that, I was very common to do in the golden age.....a have a few pages (not Ditko) where there is a lot of blotting all around the edges, outside the story, Or on the back, I would imagine this to be the case with the ditkos as well

Chris - This, IIRC, was in the Channel 4 Ditko Documentary. Someone got to go into his apartment, in the 90's, and stacks of originals were behind curtains and whatnot, and Ditko was using them as cutting boards, etc...The guy asked for some and Ditko said no. Apparently, he believes they have no value because past work is not indicative of...something or another in the current work. It was cah-razy.
