I think blame for that one lies at the feet of Grant Morrison...usually I like his quirky interpretations but he stumbled on the Beast IMO. Something about a 2nd mutation kicking in...similar to telepath Emma Frost gaining the ability to turn her body into a dimaond -like substance.

^^^ I thought Emma got that pwr because she was in Iceman's body. Somehow she was forged into his body for a bit there,.. & It really screwed Bobby up in the head, because she was able to do things with his power that he was not..., then was able to take some of it with her, when she left his body.

^ I don't know that storyline. But I remember during Morison's run on "New X-Men" he had something in there about secondary mutations which resulted in power changes for Beast and Emma...I don't recall if it happened to anyone else. Her body becomes diamond or something like diamond, no ice powers that I know of so I'm not sure about the Iceman angle.

This was a pretty fun exercise. I just finished reading Uncanny X-Men Omnibus Vol. 1 and I'm looking forward to Vol.2. 70's - 80s X-Men is about as good as comic books get!

Haven't read X-Men since 1993, so I'm sure there are a ton of characters I haven't thought of/even known about. I want characters with depth for my issues of the X-Men, so I'm not sure if I should include Gambit. Did they ever give him more of a story? I liked him, even though I didn't know too much about him. I had to give up comics in 1993 after every issue was a "Special," "Collectors Edition!" "Foil-Embossed!" cover. One month it was a dollar for an issue, the next month it was $2.95. Right then and there, I figured the comic book industry could bite me and I never looked back.
