Favorite Bronze Age Comic Book Lines?

    Hi all,

I am thinking about getting back into the comic book world and revisiting "my" era of mid to late 1970s.

For those in the know, what are some of your favorite Marvel and DC runs of that period?

Ones I recall fondly are Conan, Detective Comics, and Green Lantern/Green Arrow.

Thanks in advance for your opinions!

Since this was my"Golden-age" I was an avid reader, and comics were not expensive,
My Mom encouraged my reading by giving me money to buy as many comics as I wanted.

My Fav from the 70's-mid 80's
    1. X-Men, I was actually reading and collecting the reprints when they announced the new team...which became my fav...I quit reading x-men in the 90's
2.Fantastic Four- became a fan after seeing the Hanna-Barbera cartoons, Became a huge fan during John Bryne's run
3.Teen Titans- Marv Wolfman and George Perez legendary run brought me back to buying DC comics again
    4. Heavy Metal Magazine- changed my whole look on what Illustrated stories were about.
    5. Love and Rockets- Hopey and Maggie and the people of Palomar made me believe comics without superhero's don't suck
    6.Iron Man- Bob Layton!!!!!
7.Captain America-John Bryne's short run and Freeking badass Mike Zeck!!
    8.Spiderman-Because he's always a good read.
9.Hulk- both his comic and Rampaging Hulk ruled!
    10. Savage Sword of Conan- glorious black and white line art CROM!!!!!
11.Iron Fist- is when I said to myself i want to be an illustrator when i grow up
12.Teenage mutant ninja Turtles...cause they were badass when they began
13.The Rocketeer-I first laid eyes on him when I bought Starslayer from pacific comics...I first thought it was an obscure reprint of an old comic from the 40's because of Dave Stevens incredible art.....
14.Detective comics-Batman, loved that he was not the campy Batman from the tv show. as a kid i found him scary....
15.Avengers- I was a huge Vision Fan and only bought the book because of him....lol

I'd have to say the 70's stuff would probably be these titles:

Defenders....pre five fingered hand story line. Dollar Bill stories were fun...but on the border of being annoying.
Green Lantern/Green Arrow...The Grell issues are great. Great art and fun stories.
                  Daredevil/Black Widow issues are great.
Captain America Nomad storyline is fantastic as is the Zeck and Beatty run on the low to mid 200's
                  New Teen Titans...Perez/Wolfman...nuff said.
Detective Comics...Green Arrow run with Trevor Von Eeden art. I think it starts around issue 251 or so. That is also the 1st Vertigo issue. Von Eeden's art is AMAZING...and he doesn't get credit for defining GA.
Adventure Comics Spectre run....I think it starts with issue 431 and runs through to issue 440:

Last but definitely NOT least is what I think is the best book of the early 80's and that is All Star Squadron. Very doable as a series...only 67 issues. If you like the Golden Age of DC characters you will love this title.
"When not too many people can see we're all the same
And because of all their tears,
Their eyes can't hope to see
                  The beauty that surrounds them
                  Isn't it a pity".

                  - "Isn't It A Pity"
                  By George Harrison

                    Hmmmm....

                    My fave Bronze Age books?

-Micronauts. THIS is the comic that got me reading comics seriously
-Star Wars. The Marvel one. I STILL love the earlier ones.
                    -Conan. My childhood hero.
-The Occult Files of Dr Spektor. Another one I'm still a fan of. Glad it didn't get remade in the 90's.
-Midnight Tales. One of the most underrated comics ever.
-Starfire. From DC. The original one.
-2001. These freaked me out as a kid.

The Brave and The Bold -- Great old-school title for a comic, and part of that great team-up genre like Marvel Team-Up or Marvel Two-In-One that nobody does any more. B&B was a fun Batman title from before DC completely committed to the lone psycho take on Batman, and the stories and team-ups could be just solid (Batman and Green Arrow hunting a up a serial killer, Batman and Black Canary foiling a skyjacking, Earth-2 Batman and Sgt Rock in WWII together) to just fun & weird in a good way (Batman and the Atom, Batman and Metamorpho doing anything together). I think the Bronze Age went into cardiac arrest when DC cancelled that title, and it wasn't too long after that it finally passed with Crisis and the Byrne Superman reboot.

The first 12 issues of Micronauts is one of the best extended stories in comics ever, period. I stil think someone need to throw a million or two at it and make a two-night, low budget Syfy channel movie out of it.

Marvel SW was great (earlier the better) and 2001 was freaky, with everyone getting turned into a star-child at the end of each issue, until it launched Machine Man -- how many people remember it was Aaron Stack's contact with the Monolith that started him on his adventures? I'll bet that's completely out of continuity now!

I thought the return of Karza bit was great too; even though stuff like that USUALLY feels like a rehash. Then all the trippy stuff about the creation of the Microverse, and the keys....

I used to love hitting the flea markets for older comics while I was waiting for the latest issues of my subscruptions to be deleivered in their brown wrappers, back then I could afford to read comics on a paper route money and still have money for ice cream and soda, now I can't afford to read comics even if I wanted to - that should be a clue to the indistry whats wrong with comics

Ghost rider - original run with JB not the later ones
JLA - pre detroit league always one's Id' grab but I was reading it sold from issue 140-220's
All Star comics and later All Star Squadron (whihc is where I really cultured my golden age/earth 2 connection)
Green lantern (till crisis it was pretty solid) I had/have almost the whole run from the relanch in the mid 70's (issue 90) til it ended and in 82 I got the hard travelling heroes as a baxter paper reprints (6 issues one of my favorites)
Flash - have most issues after 219 and several before that. Another great comic becuse the giant issues almost always had golden and silver age reprints)
                              Capt america
Iron man (exp in the drunk tony years pre Rhodey) stipped about the time of the armor wars
Xmen - till like 88 when all the spinoffs started
Brave and the bold and DC comics presents were ones i picked up when I liked the co star
anyhthing Spiderman but my favorite was Perter partker is the spectacular spiderman (at least i think that one which was reprinting older issues so I got to read 60's and early 70's stuff)
Batman and Superman - I gobbled up anything I could get expecially issues from the mid 70's

and while they were licensed properties i really liked
                              Team America
                              Star wars
                              Indiana Jones
