The animated GL show was really good, so much better than the movie, but it was pulled primarily bc the GL toys from the film didn't sell, according to Bruce Timm.

I'm in there with you BK. Sinestro was the best written character and came off the best with a fine supporting performance by Mark Strong but I thought Reynolds was fine and the stuff with Oa and Kilowog and Tomar Re and the Guardians was very cool.

Paralax was tied to Hector Hammond to have a threat on Earth, but it would have been better if the action would have just stayed in space with the Corps when Hal went to Oa. Warner could have had the Corps take on Paralax in space and let Hal be the hero by being the first GL to overcome the yellow impurity power deficiency. Jealousy could prompt Sinestro to turn against the Corps to set up the sequel.

By cutting all the Hammond crap, more time could have been spent on training Hal and setting up Sinestro's eventual turn. There would have even been more time for hero montage on Earth like in Superman: the Movie, and the silly race car track rescue could have been dropped.

Another option would have been to have just gone with the Hammond story on Earth and not tie it into Paralax and the Corps. The Guardians could have appeared at the end of the film to set up the sequel. In early issues of the GL comic, the guardians and Corps was a slow build and reveal. Such a move might have solidified Hal/Reynolds and his backstory without front-loading the movie with so much GL lore, even though that was about my favorite part about the film.

Reynolds can blame Campbell, but it's a elixir of those two, the producers, Johns and WB. WB was convinced by whoever, (Johns and Dido were certainly in on it), that GL was DC's Iron Man equivalent. But instead of understanding what that meant in comicspeak, they wanted to ape IM, and tried to make Hal, Tony.

Except, Hal Jordan has to be dead-pan serious. Because if he's not then magical rings, alien orc best friends, giant bats or baseball gloves and the Snidely Whiplash of Outer Space, is ludicrous.

The lead character not instantly buying in to the weight of the situation, is the equivalent of having Flash Gordon or Luke Skywalker scoff when told about the larger world around them.

And Reynolds one great trait, is his smart-a$$ability.

IMO, Hal should have been Tim Olyphant. He's got the same heaviness Michael Biehn had in the 80's. Maybe Josh Brolin.

But Reynolds was Wally West. Whoever convinced him to transfer his deal from Flash to GL is the one really responsible for killing two franchises.

The script for the Flash film that was in development before GL's flop featured Barry Allen, who is more white bread and serious than Jordan has ever been portrayed. So unless Geoff Johns was using West's personality with Allen's name in that script, then the argument for Reynolds as Flash is moot unless you are allowing for the fact that he is an actor, who with a good script coupled with better than just competant direction, could pull off the role.

Since Top Gun came out and particularly following the reboot of GL's origin in the late 80s mini series Emerald Dawn, Jordan's personality in the comics for better or worse took it cues from Cruise's performance. Wreckless and courageous and insubordinate and kind of an endearing smart aleck who is good with the ladies and an ace in the cockpit but a screw up in most other areas of his life. I've not seen everything Reynolds has done, but that kind of character is in his wheelhouse.

Did he give an award-winning performance? No, heck no. But, he was better than the script and he wasn't as lifeless as the direction. Campbell, who is a fine director, got caught in the gears of the sci-Fi CGI fantasy of the film. He was out of his element and it showed. Having a reworked, patchwork script that was tonally helter skelter and so full of exposition and marketing crap didn't do him any favors. Some if not much of that has to be laid at the feet of Johns, who did an uncredited rewrite of the script. Warner's execs were likely all up in the production of the movie, which probably didn't help matters.

That being said Tim Olyphant, who plays a decent smart aleck, well, his involvement in just about any film would make it better.

Justin Timberlake and Ryan Gosling were the other two actors in consideration for the role. Of those three, I think Reynolds was the best fit for the role, although Gosling is a better actor and Timberlake possibly could have brought some ticket sales based on his popularity as a pop star.

Sorry for being so argumentative. I know all of our opinions are solidified and we're not likely to sway each other.

I'm just sorry the film wasn't all it could have been. Had the film worked, there might have been a Flash film ready for release this Christmas and a GL sequel in line for next summer. Now, who knows if we will ever see those characters and others on the big screen.

If Man of Steel does well, maybe there is a chance, but who knows.
