Very sad to hear this as a fan of his work especially Howard the Duck....A sad day in the Comic book world.....I was recently telling my son that it would be nice if someday a CGI version of Howard the Duck based on Steve's vision would finally make it to the big screen.....The Movie version that came out in the 80's was horrid.
He'd written so many books over the years.... if you've ever read a mainstream comic that was actually DIFFERENT, he probably wrote it. Stuff like this is a shame; we really NEED guys like Gerber right now.
Never read the books. But like the Movie,.. & still do today.
The movie is a sad, sad shadow of the original Gerber written comic books.
Howard the Duck was topical and contemporary and unafraid of skewering the culture and politics of it's day. I always felt the movie lacked the "teeth" of his four colour counterpart. Although the wonderful Lea Thompson is lovely as always.
I didn't think that Gerber could pull off a return to the character in recent years, but he managed to bring back the old magic...
Although I suspect there is a nod to Stewart the Rat in there as well.
It was a real shame that it was cancelled twice after relaunching again with "Season 2". I have to wonder if it would have fared better the second time around if they brought it into the Vertigo banner where cult books like Transmetropolitan and 100 Bullets are nurtured.
