I rented it today...and surprisingly, I liked it...it reminded me of RoboCop...not only in the ultra violence...but it had that old school feel to it...like an 80s sci-fi movie.
The only thing that kinda bothered me is that he NEVER removes his helmet...I wanted to see Karl Urban's face at least once...so you can relate to him as a human being...and sometimes I couldn't tell which Judge was who...but aside from that...it was good...and I would watch it again.

I loved the fact that he never removes his helmet in the movie! In that respect, it's a totally accurate reflection of the comic.
And the essence of Dredd (at least in the comics) is that you're actually not supposed to relate to him as a human being... he's the faceless representative of a dehumanized totalitarian state and a fascistic regime.
>he's the faceless representative of a dehumanized totalitarian state and a fascistic regime
Yup. That's a big part of his character, and it's important to hang onto 'cos Dredd doesn't have much character. That's the point. He's not a person so much as a force of nature. In the comics the story is NEVER about Dredd; it's about the bad guys. Once Dredd shows up, it's over. (He has one super power: win.) One of the worst things about the Stallone Dredd was that they TRIED to make him a character. Doesn't work so good 'cos it takes too much monkeying to fit it into the basic ideas from the comic.
There's a good minifilm on the disk about this; when they interview the guys who worked on the earliest comic stories. It's interesting to contrast that with the interviews with the guys who did the design work for the film.... the difference in perception is striking.
I saw this on DVD and thought it was infinitely better than how it was advertised. It took me a while though to warm to Karl Urban as Dredd. I felt like the director had a hard time nailing down what he wanted out of him. What he said sounded Dredd-like. But how he said it sometimes didn't come across as a hardened officer from the streets. Urban seem to get more comfortable in the role as he went along. In the end I felt like he came across as a mix between Dark Knight and Dirty Harry. He had this rough exterior, but he also had this heart which he couldn't hide from his rookie partner Anderson. I really liked Anderson too. She made for an interesting partner. Although, once again, I have to say that set up felt like the same dynamic as Dirty Harry. The villain and her henchmen felt very Robocop-ish. And I liked her link with the police force. Nice twist. Overall a good movie that kept me compelled throughout. I'm glad I checked it out. Unfortunate no more will likely get made. Had this story been better flushed out in the marketing, I would have checked it out in the theaters.

I kind of wondered about casting Urban in the role. I mean, he was fairly badass as Eomer and in Pathfinder, but he played Bones so well in Star Trek, it was easy to forget he was previously a tough guy. It definitely sounds like it's worth checking out.
Watched this on demand and must say I was blown away.
Loved the story and was surprised by the level of gore.
Very well done going to get it on Blu Ray.
After Seeing the Movie ...
I think that The Movie was Good and Entertaining ..., my type of movie all around, and it had a Ton of Mindless Action. I liked Lena as Mama too... Great Villian imo ...
The Movie really Played it safe, as far as the Trapped in the Building Theme, and Probably Saved a Ton on the Production of the Film, which was Smart , because it worked.
Warner & DC Should Snag Urban to Be The Next Batman. He could pull of Wayne with ease, and Is Great in Action Flicks too ...., and His "BATMAN Voice" is Out of it's League Compaired to Bales.
Urban's Done alot of Great Action Movies .... And I think He's on the Rise ....Obviously Batman Would Push the Actor over A List, Because I don't think He is Quite there just yet ...
1 of my Favorite Roles of Urban was in The Movie Priest ...
In the Movie He plays the 1st Ever Human Vampire. ...., I think it's Great. Check it out if you have not.
... The Original Knight ..., Often Imitated, However Never Duplicated. The 1st Knight in Customs.
Keep him as DR. McCoy. He was uncanny in that role. There are lots of people, mostly unknowns, who can be Batman. Hell, Kilmer and Clooney were Batman.
I almost had a psychic girlfriend but she dumped me before we met.
If anyone here believes in psychokinesis, please raise my hand.
