    Howard the Duck....?

    So;

I just saw the movie "ted." It was surprisingly funny, but what really stuck with me was how much Ted (the character) was like Howard from the comic.

    Weird.

It's too bad that Howard the movie will probably never get remade, with today's effects he could be awesome! However, Marvel now treats the character as a one-off joke. In the hands of a talented writer like say, Garth Ennis, the series could achieve a modern day sensibilty of satire. I could see today's HTD skewering topics like political correctness, fiscal cliffs, unemployment, career politicians that never accomplish anything, crime, etc.

I haven't seen Ted, but I love the Howard The Duck comic. Steve Gerber was a great writer and he always hit social and political issues. It would be great to see someone give it another go.

There is some Similar Quality's with Ted, as with Howard the Duck.
But I also saw Brian from Family Guy..., and Roger from American Dad as well.
Seth McFarlane Loves that Character in there , that is more so the Imagination of something , that interacts with the Themed Family.

        Ted was pretty Funny. ....
As Much as I love His Work..., I was alittle disapointed...
But the Constant Love for Flash Gordon and Sam Jones Was Fantastic, as was Same Jones and the "Ming" Fight.

          >with today's effects he could be awesome!

I don't think it was the effects that sunk the movie, it was the writing. In the comic he was a gruff, angry little misanthrope. In the movie he was a proto-ninja turtle. MOVIE ninja turtle, not one of them gritty ones from the original b&w comic.... All of the commentary that made the character interesting got washed away for the sake of a PG rating. (Could you imagine a "Howard for President" campaign amidst the political insanity of the last decade?)

          >It would be great to see someone give it another go.

Maybe; but we've had a decade of that sort of thing on tv.... wherein an out of place character makes ascerbic commentary on the world.... so Howard (even though he was one of the first anyone would recognize) would come off as a rip. I think that's one reason the return they did in the 90's didn't go over so well.

See.... like that. Howard isn't unique any more. (I wonder if ol' Seth was a fan?)

            >Constant Love for Flash Gordon and Sam Jones Was Fantastic

Yes it was. It smacked a bit of McFarlane's love of non-sequitur refrences, except they JUST WOULDN'T LET IT GO! And it sneaks up on you. And oddly enough, it makes perfect sense....

The 80s almost killed Howard the Duck with that stupid movie.

I'd like a Masterworks done for Howard's entire run, but I just picked up nearly (95%) his entire run of comics (and his Annual) on eBay for about $15 shipped.., all in F/VF condition. AND these are better than the Masterworks since I can read the letter pages.

Just missing the first two issues (and his earlier Man-Thing appearances..). Was QUITE a deal.

I remember being puzzled as to why a cigar-smoking Duck was in all the Marvel house ads in the 70s. Well heck, I thought he was Donald Duck out of uniform then!

Then when the movie hit, and I saw it on VHS, I wondered why they made a movie like this that seemed to be geared toward kids...and then obviously alluded to Howard and Leah Thompson's character having sex. Although I guess a lot of kid-centric films at that time had some pretty adult language and innuendo (Goonies, Monster Squad).

                        Hmmmm....

                        They discuss it here:

Look, Hollywood, we understand that film is a different medium than comic books. We realize that changes must be made, storylines streamlined, art design massaged. The inner nerd in us can even forgive annoying details like Peter Parker developing webbing rath

                        From the article:

                        >The movie was to be rated PG, meaning they had to both dumb it down and walk a weird line between the kiddie audience and the comic's racy humor. Thus, Beverly Switzler, the only character other than Howard who appeared in both the comic and the movie, was a nude art model in one medium and a musician in the other. Can you guess which is which? HINT: The movie was rated PG, and people who read comics are horny almost all the time.

Howard the comic came about during a weird time for Marvel; they were shying away from the more.... let's say grown-up stories of the early 70's, and heading towards the more marketable kids stuff of the late 70's. Howard was one of them books still leaning towards the grown-up side. Not because of any questionable/mature/racy content, but more because it dealt with things that would appeal to a grown-up mind.... like politics, social commentary, even the inherent silliness of the superhero.
