I know a lot of people feel this was the beginning of the end for comics, that it was a bad gimmick, whatever, but I still think it is a great story and a great read. -
I feel old...20 years ago but in the scheme of things it seems like it was just yesterday. 'Bout time for them to kill him off again...a new generation, a new 52Think OUTSIDE the Box! For the BEST in Repro & Custom Packaging!Comment

It was the beginning of the end of my interest in comics for a long time. Up till that point I was a regular reader of all the Superman titles and a good bit of DC's other books. Only Byrnes stuff on Next Men, Wonder Woman, and New Gods kelpt me reading awhile longer.Comment

It was actually a pretty good story. The fact that the media picked up on it like they did was just a slow news day fluke. Sure DC wanted some attention, but they got WAY more than they bargained for. The storylines following this were actually really good. Although I do think the Carlin led super teams lost some steam after Super Mullet returned. They seemed like they were constantly trying to one up the Death and Return, and they just couldn't.
Man, the Superman books were really good back then. Stern, Ordway, Jurgens, Simonson, Bonadove, Kesel, Grummet, Guice...

"Everyone looks up to you. They listen to you. If you tell them to fight, they'll fight. But they need to be inspired. wow. 20 yrs. I still have it in a long box. (like most of the 90s Superman run)
I know it led to "let's top ourselves with another event", which I really don't like. But this story (the whole Death & Return) was good as a story.
The "Reign of the Supermen" was actually better than "Death" IMO.Comment

I was in college, working for a comic/magazine publisher and doing some time in their adjacent comic shop. I remember getting these in that morning, Tuesdays was the day back then for Diamond. I bought one bagged one and one standard to read. I can't fathom it's literally been two decades since that happened. I suddenly have the urge to yell "get offa my lawn".I almost had a psychic girlfriend but she dumped me before we met.
