Oddly enough, I just came across "Darker Image" #1 in my collection. Not sure why I really have it, but for giggles I thought I'd check ebay and see how far the mighty has fallen. Completed auctions didn't even sell for 99 cents. That's the first appearance of The Maxx, who once had his own animated series. Well if I run out of TP, I know where to go.

Wish the whole "comics as investment" stuff never started. I partly blame that for the change in paper and higher prices. I use to really enjoy the Superman titles in the early nineties every week for only .75c. It was the best deal on the newstands until the whole Death of Superman storyline started.

I sold my mint TMNT #1 first printing in 1987 for $60. No wait, maybe it was $80!

Kinda wish I'd held on to it.

Yeah. I think what happened there was Marvel and DC saw the independents using the better materials and charging 4X what they did for a comic and figured they could cut into that market. (Hence their creation of "direct sales" lines in the early 80's.) The speculator boom took of shortly thereafter (thank you, CNN) and it was off to the races.

In 1988, when news of Robin's death in "A Death in the Family" hit, the owner of the drugstore I got most of my comics from bought several cases of Batman #428. He was convinced it was going to put his kids through college or something. I was 13 and went along with it, and I still have about 10 copies of that issue floating around here somewhere.
