>I'm thinking probably Jim Steranko as the first (although I'm waaaaaaay to young to remember when he first started.)
Maybe, but he did have a decent output of good stuff, so I odn't think he was EXACTLY a celebrity-by-design. Romita Sr had more than a touch of that as well, but he produced a lot of innovative stuff; mostly in terms of layouts and sneaky use of line weights.
>Byrne's popularity owes alot to X-Men and his work with Chris Claremont. From there, he was all over the place because he was quick, reliable, and (bonus) could write.
Yeah. His work was also pretty clean compared to a lot of the other folks of the day, but even then I dodn't see anything spectacular from him. He was a journeyman who got REAL lucky.
>There should be more consistency even between artist of vastly different styles
Well.... I dunno. That sort of thing can cause problems too 'cos it locks you into a limited pallette of visuals. Heck; look at guys like Romita, Sinott, Buschema.... they're all REAL similar design-wise. House styles are more a marketing thing than anything else.
>Harlan Ellison said Dave was brilliant but was also Lazy and it took him forever to do a comic
HAW! ELLISON is a wad! I think in Stevens' favour was that yeah, he took a LONG time to finish anything but the results were worth it. (Unlike some guys who take.... oh, a YEAR to finish a book, and it ends up looking really similar to everything else they've done.)
