    Dark Knight Returns DVD review

If you liked the comic, you'll like the movie. Not quite as literal an adaptation as Year:One, but still pretty much the comic on screen. I was a little concerned with early art I saw, thinking it was too clean and homogonized to capture Miller's morphing style. Miller starts out in Book 1 with some of his Adams influence intact, and by Book 4 it's totally exorcised. Somehow the design team of this film manages to synthesize the overall feel of the series into an animation style that works.

The voice acting is top-notch. I really liked Peter Weller as an aged Batman. Maybe it didn't hurt that Robocop had a similar vibe going for it as well. David Selby of Dark Shadows fame makes a great old Jim Gordon. They pretty much carry this part.

The movie moves along at good clip despite having the story split into two parts. They expanded some of the actions scenes, filling in the ticks between the comic panels. None of this detracts from the story or the adaptation of the source material.

If you are a Batman fan, and particularly a fan of this seminal work, I'd definitely recommend this. Be interesting to see how they handle the more wonko elements that will come up in Part 2.

I somehow knew after you said you bought it, a review would follow. Great job, short sweet and to the point.

sounds good, I just don't get why it's in 2 parts?

I would have to say there is a two-fold reason for this being in two parts. The first two books of THE DARK KNIGHT series largely dealt with Bruce Wayne/Batman coming out of retirement and taking his city back from the mutants. The second two books dealt with his actual presence in a world where he no longer really fits in as well as his inevitable final showdown with his arch-nemesis The Joker (which I'm sure they'll likely expand on) and, of course, the culmination of the ideologies between Batman's motivations and Superman's motivations. For those reasons alone, I wouldn't be surprised to see Part Two run perhaps a little longer than Part One.

Plus, by splitting the movie into two parts, Warner Bros. and DC can dig deeper into your wallet!!!
sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.

Purchased it on DVD and watched it last night. Well worth the money. Great animation and the story was well told. Can't wait for part 2.

I feel like an idiot--I thought the new DVD was an adaptaion of Miller's DK sequel, which I disliked intensely.

^Don't feel bad. All the Returns/Strikes Again/Rises stuff is probably confusing to most folks. I have to correct myself sometimes.

But I think if they ever made DK2 (or Dark Knight Strikes Again) into a movie, it would probably be the end of the DCU movies. I don't think ANYONE likes that series. I still think Miller was just seeing how far he could push DC and still have them kiss his arse.

Yeah, he did that just for a paycheck. It bears little similarity to it's predecessor. Miller claimed he didn't want to repeat himself but I think he was just being lazy.

^No, not lazy--mercenary. "The Spirit" was lazy.

^Yeah, I think Miller fully intended to desecrate DC's properties and laugh all the way to the bank. Also see "All-Star Batman".

I also only paid 10 bucks for this ..
I liked it better than the last couple of DCU Toons .....
I think it was also, so far, better than the Comicbook to me.
It seemed, to me ... that I grasped the whole story better.
                        It was good.
