Somebody needs to force them to watch the Spirit and read The Dark Knight Strikes Again, or whatever Miller's sequel was to Dark Night Returns. That'd change their mind.
But the anecdote in the article seems totally contrived. It may be true, but it smells of make believe to me. At best it's probably trial balloon floated on bleeding cool.
I think Miller is one of them "better lucky than good" guys, and the time he made his mark has more to do with his success than his skill; which relegates him to a certain era. Hence the lukewarm reception his more recent stuff has been getting.
....and yeah, his JLA would be kinda blah 'cos he'd make EVERYONE all film noir. All emphasis is no emphasis.
Miller is so apathetic to super heroes now. He worked them out of his system with DKR. Year One was a crime book. Sin City was a crime book. DKSA was a mistake. The Spirit was a train wreck.
Miller needs to stay in his Noir crime world now.
WB is just completely clueless where to go with this. They just know they want to beat Marvel, and have no idea how.
But I question this whole story, honestly. It may have happened, or may not have. But even if it did, it could be some low-level market folks out doing research, and that's it.
Answer's obvious for WB to make a great JLA movie. Talk to the folks that did the Justice League Animated/Unlimited cartoons, bring them into the mix as consultants or active participants on the project. Those folks got everything about what worked with the DC characters, the interactions between them, the villains they fought, the storylines... everything. Just take all those elements and transfer them to live-action.
Forget the Smallville stuff. Move on from he Nolan Bat-verse. Get back to basics, keep things simple.
"It's sad that governments are chiefed by the double tongues. There is iron in your words of death for all Comanche to see, and so there is iron in your words of life. No signed paper can hold the iron. It must come from men. The words of Ten Bears carries the same iron of life and death. It is good that warriors such as we meet in the struggle of life... or death. It shall be life."
^You and I are in total agreement. If DC won't let Timm run their comics, then give him the movies. He's expressed interest in getting into live-action before.
Evidently for Warner Bros. and DC, it must be pretty damn hard!!!
sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.
I think they know, but aren't happy about it. Their current audience is mostly oldster, long term fans; a diminishing market. They WANT new fans, but aren't quite sure how to get them; hence doing so many things with their books that not only irks the oldsters, but turns off the younger comic fans. (HINT: Naruto doesn't reset every ten volumes....) The movies fare better; but that's probably because people will see an action movie regardless. Hence why the Batman films can do awesome at the box office, and NONE of that success translates to new readers for the books. It's not the character that hooks them, it's the explosions.
WB already tried that with Geoff Johns and GL and it didn't work. So I'm surprised Miller is even being mentioned with this.

I listen to a lot of Kevin Smith's smodcasts. My favorite of course is Fat Man on Batman. He interviews people who have worked on Batman or have contributed in some way to Batman. In his interview with Paul Dini he talks about how Warner approached him about a Superman movie (back before Superman Returns). Kevin Smith told them flat out the guys they need to talk to are Dini and Timm. They know everything about these characters. The executives told him that it wasn't how things worked in Hollywood...
