In the Decade of the 1930's-Recreating The Comic Cover from Superman the Movie

Ok so here is something fun,Back in 1978 one of the most striking images from the Superman movie was not Superman himself. It was actually right in
the beginning of the movie. The comic book in which we see right from the start. I remember as a kid looking at it and at first being puzzled
to why it was used instead of the the Iconic action comics#1. I remember trying afterwards to find that cover and realized after awhile it never existed. Now to my knowledge, I have never seen that particular piece of art ever published in any magazine (if you have and know a link please share)

So I decided that I wanted to recreate that drawing, boy it was not easy. getting reference was difficult thanks to (Johnmiic) for getting me some clear screen shots from the movie.

The Drawing here is in Pencil form on 14x17 Bristol I still feel I need to fix the ships a little bit more, I missed a few things and need to tweek and change other things but, I got past the hard part and got it almost done. The type face was added on my computer taken from the original typeface used on Action Comics number one.

    Enjoy
    Steve.

    Nice.

Could that cover be a panel re-created from the original comic strip or Action?

I used to wonder the same thing as a kid. now, I guess it was probably a legal issue/rights issue. But, considering that it helps set the plot of what's to come in "act I" without revealing the suit, leaving the great scene with Clark being seen for the first time in costume in the FOS. Maybe it was an artistic choice.

Regardless, excellent design and pencil work. Very cool!
      It's all good!

Nicely done. Now you should color it.

          Awesome illustration!

It's been years since I watched the movie, but my guess is that the filmmakers didn't want to show Superman yet so his first appearance would have bigger impact.

Well done! It has a real Shuster vibe to it as well. Looks like some of his early pencil drawings that still exist.

I wonder if in the prop comic used for the film they just photocopied and reduced the first rocket to add it as the second rocket?

LOL!! John I photo copied my drawing of the first ship, then reduced it down and light boxed it so i could get the same exact ship, it was a pain to draw it small, I'm sure that's how they may have done it too.....
