This was the issue I had him sign for me:

I remember as I was getting the book signed by Joe he told me to stick around because Murphy was supposed to be coming to the show as a sort of surprise guest. I didn't realize that Murphy was the inker in the backup story. I think it may have been the 1st thing that both of them had worked on together as artist/inker team. I could be wrong though.

Funny thing was I met a art collector that was at the show, he must have been in his late 50's early 60's, and he told me and showed me some art that Joe had given him while he was up visiting DC. It was a story that Joe did with either the 7 Soldiers of Victory or just the Shining Knight. Thinking it was late 40's or early 50's that they had become friends.
"When not too many people can see we're all the same
And because of all their tears,
Their eyes can't hope to see
      The beauty that surrounds them
      Isn't it a pity".

      - "Isn't It A Pity"
      By George Harrison

I was lucky enough to meet Kubert in 99, and he signed my History of the DCU on the page with his essay and art on the war comics. Same (or similar) art as the piece Anthony posted above with Rock and the other war heroes.

Aw, NO! So sad to hear this. Truly a legend and inexorably tied to Mego history through his school's artwork in the Hero's World catalogs. RIP.

A True Legend and a Giant in the industry.....truly a sad day. R.I.P one of my biggest regrets was not being able to go to his school......

Sad news - I just heard now.

I'm ashamed to say I've only been getting into Kubert's work in the last couple of years. I grew up a Marvel kid and wasn't as exposed to his work much. For some reason I'd always considered him more of a very competent workhorse than a talent I'd be interested in - but looking through his work closer changed my mind about him. There's an excitement and tension his work captures, and it's really effective. The shots he uses and the way he tells his stories visually always seems to be right on the money.

I've been doing some catch-up and I need to do a lot more.

Sad stuff. I was a student at the Kubert School back in the day, and got the chance to meet Joe a few times. Terrific guy, huge inspiration to me and legions of artists. He'll be missed. :(
"It's sad that governments are chiefed by the double tongues. There is iron in your words of death for all Comanche to see, and so there is iron in your words of life. No signed paper can hold the iron. It must come from men. The words of Ten Bears carries the same iron of life and death. It is good that warriors such as we meet in the struggle of life... or death. It shall be life."

I was a huge fan of his art in Rock. And he worked with hasbro to create the Rock-like SGT Savage in the 90's.
