Affleck to talk with Warners about directing JLA movie

Variety's report on Affleck and Justice League

With Christopher Nolan declaring himself out of the running for "Justice League," Warner Bros. has approached another of its go-to directors in Ben Affleck, who's expected to discuss the project with studio brass in the coming days, multiple sources tell Variety.

Since guiding WB's "The Town" to commercial success and critical acclaim from both sides of the camera, Affleck has ascended high on the studio's list of filmmakers who can be trusted with prime properties. Thus far, Affleck is the only candidate who's been sent Will Beall's "Justice League" script, which the "Gangster Squad" scribe was hired to write last summer.

DC Comics' answer to Marvel's Avengers, "Justice League" is expected to bring together marquee characters Batman and Superman, as well as Green Lantern, Wonder Woman and The Flash. Affleck has made it clear that he's only interested in directing films in which he also stars -- "The Town" and "Argo" are proof of that -- so its likely that if this pairing ever came to fruition, he would don a suit of his own. DC Entertainment, Warner Bros. and Affleck's reps declined to comment.

While Affleck has shown an aptitude for mid-budget movies, he's poised to prove he can handle a nine-figure budget like other actors-turned-directors Jon Favreau ("Iron Man") and Kenneth Branagh ("Thor").

One possible hesitation on Affleck's part is that any involvement with "Justice League" would take him out of circulation as a director for a few years. He could, however, still fit in an acting gig at Warners.

Affleck has spent the last several weeks mulling an offer to star in topline Greg Berlanti's long-gestating sci-fi drama "Replay," which WB has spent more than a decade developing. Based on Ken Grimwood's 1987 bestseller, story follows a man who dies and gets the chance to relive his life over and over again, changing partners and professions each time.

As a director, Affleck is also keen to bring another epic adaptation to the bigscreen: Stephen King's "The Stand," a potential two-part pic that will be a co-production between CBS Films and Warners. Should Affleck sign on for "Justice League," it remains unclear whether WB would wait for him to move forward on "The Stand" or bring on another filmmaker.

Warner Bros. took control of DC Comics in 2009, folding the comicbook company into the studio and re-launching it as DC Entertainment to better manage how its characters wind up on the big and small screens. The CW will air "Arrow," based on the Green Arrow character this fall, but the studio hasn't greenlit any new films since "Man of Steel," which bows summer 2013. Other pics based on Wonder Woman and the Flash also are in development, but are only in script stages.

"Justice League" won't likely be ready for release until summer 2015, which could put it up right against Marvel's "Avengers 2," which has Joss Whedon returning to helm.

Since making his directorial debut in 2007 with "Gone Baby Gone," Affleck has been balancing acting and directing duties. After "The Town," he signed on to work with Terrence Malick on "To the Wonder" before returning to Warners for "Argo," which preems at Toronto next month. Multihyphenate recently wrapped New Regency's online gambling pic "Runner, Runner," and is also developing a movie about Boston crime boss Whitey Bulger with fellow "Good Will Hunting" Oscar winner Matt Damon.

So I guess Affleck will don the Green Lantern costume?

Yeah, that was my first reaction. If it wasn't Variety reporting it, I would think it was just smoke. However to Affleck's credit "Town" and "Gone Baby Gone" were two very good movies. But if he's going to take a role in a Justice League movie, who would he play? You have to a assume Cavil would return as Superman. I'd say probably Batman. Or maybe he would take a lesser role of some sort or even the villain.

I really wish they would grab Brad Bird somehow, but I'm guessing he's probably working on another Mission Impossible sequel for Paramount.

Affleck was actually quite good as George Reeves in "Hollywoodland". I'm more concerned with WB giving JL to a director who has never done a movie of this scale.

Affleck may play Flash instead of GL. But isn't he getting a bit old to be starting a Super Hero franchise, acting wise?

I think JLA is out of his....well league. It needs to be done by someone who has more technical knowhow. Im not saying he doesnt have the potential, hes pretty good, just not something like that.

It also has me thinking: who will Kevin Smith be playing....

I'm certainly not pushing Affleck, but the one thing I can think of in his favor is that both with The Town and particularly with Gone Baby Gone, he got excellent performances from an ensemble cast. To me that's what really made the Avengers work, that interplay between the characters, giving each one defining moments without one character or the other dominating the film.

Admittedly, Affleck hasn't made a film of Justice League's scale, but Whedon hadn't made a film of the Avengers' scale, either, until he did. I liked Serenity but it wasn't close to the scale of Avengers. Remember Nolan really hadn't worked with a big budget until he directed Batman Begins. His films prior to Batman Begins were smaller, grittier movies with excellent scripts.

Really the technical stuff — effects and CGI — as well as the action can be handled by specialists, but setting a tone, getting the performances right, handling the pacing and continuity is up to the director. Getting the more human or interpersonal aspects of a film like Justice League might be more difficult than the spectacle.

Really the important thing, though, is what kind of script do they have.

But again, it certainly seems like an odd choice no matter how you look at it, but maybe it will work. I certainly hope so if he takes the job. He did pass on Man of Steel before Snyder ultimately got the job.

One thing I think he does have going for him: some respect for the source material. (At least from what ive seen in the past, it seems like it)

^^^ I agree. He's a good director and a comic book geek. Not a bad place to start.

And while he may not have directed anything of the scale of Justice League yet, he certainly has starred in them. So that probably puts his qualifications on par with Nolan, Branagh, Favreau, or Whedon, before they helmed *their* first superhero movie, right?

On the other hand, I also read that this whole thing may just be a PR story meant to counter the Joss Whedon Avengers 2 news. So I'm not going to get too amped up about it either way quite yet.

On paper it seems a mismatch, but he's got a good eye for cinema so this may all work out. I still have my doubts this film will even become reality. I suppose Man of Steel will be the ultimate litmus test.

Hey, it could have been Michael Bay.
I almost had a psychic girlfriend but she dumped me before we met.

If anyone here believes in psychokinesis, please raise my hand.

Guys...I used to hate Affleck...he starred in some really bad stuff...and he used to overact.

But something happened along the way...the dude's acting has vastly improved...and he's slowly becoming a damn good director...if you don't believe me...check out his few last films like Gone Baby Gone and The Town...the dude has earned my respect.
