Aurora Shooting Prompts Changes to New BATMAN Cartoon

    Overkill....

    From Newsarama:

Warner Animation VP and series executive producer Sam Register is reported as ordering a review of the entire series, leading to alterations including, "changing the shape of gun barrels from round to square for the purpose of rendering the weapons in a more stylized manner reminiscent of sci-fi fare."

This incident in Colorado had nothing to do with Batman....why give more credence to that theory by changing the shape of a gun-barrel?

Batman is getting all the problems of the world dumped on his shoulders.
Instead of addressing all the real violence in the world, they're going after all the fictional violence.

Pretty soon the Punisher will be wearing Care Bear PJs and using harsh language to talk to criminals.

Does this mean Expendables characters will be carrying water guns now? Will Dirty Harry movies be altered to have paint guns? And how does changing this alter the real life issues of a kid being able to purchase the real thing? It's insane. Guns do not kill people, people do. What's next? Michael Myers going to stab people with a banana? Complete overkill. These are movies. And quite frankly most regular TV (including the news) is more graphic than anything movies can conjure up. It would be nice if we could make people accountable for their own actions, instead of blaming the tools they use to hurt others.

...and WB is rising to it. I appreciate their initial efforts; issuing the statement, pulling the commercials for a few days, and of course the generous charitable donation. But in my opinion, their actions should stop there. WB should not be ashamed of Batman now. And we shouldn't either. Batman did not shoot those people. Chris Nolan didn't shoot those people.

Yes, Nolan's movies are violent, but no more violent than many other PG-13 rated movies. And the violence depicted as ugly, not glorified. It has consequences and is shown to be horrible, not something to laugh and cheer about.

I was watching Dick Tracy on TCM Friday night. Fun movie that I like quite a bit, but Warren Beatty fires a Tommy Gun for a full 10 minutes mowing villains down left and right in a cartoony montage that has no real weight to it. To me THAT is more disturbing and potentially influential than showing a more proper estimation of what real violence is like.

I read this on Batman-On-Film. I thought the author put things in perspective pretty well.

There’s no shame and it’s not disrespectful to go see THE DARK KNIGHT RISES and want it to do well at the box office. I’m not going to give the person who caused this tragedy any run here on BOF, but I will say that NOT going to see it and feeling guilty if RISES does well is only letting that MF’er win. You know what I mean?

This wasn’t the film’s fault. This wasn’t the filmmaker’s and cast’s fault. This wasn’t Warner Bros.’ fault. This wasn’t BATMAN's fault.

It was the fault of one disturbed individual dammit! DO NOT let this despicable excuse of a human being take away your enjoyment of this movie! The same goes for ALL my friends who gave us THE DARK KNIGHT RISES -- it’s a great film that’s bringing a lot of happiness and enjoyment to people. KNOW that. ENJOY it's success. Be PROUD of it.

            That's it.

                Hmmmm....

Remember that tv shows are beholden to Standards and Practices.... and the job of S&P isn't to edit out stuff that will offend people; it's to edit stuff out that MIGHT offend people. Hence the overkill, spurious connections, and timidity.

If we edit all films to such an extent that it will no longer offend anyone/make lunatics kill people/make people uneasy..., all we will be left with is My Little Pony.
If the shooter in Aurora hadn't seen Batman, he would have picked something else to "copy".
These people are mentally ill no matter what. A Bugs Bunny cartoon could set them off.

^Amen. He could have easily have walked into Expendables 2 and have done the same thing.
