Gaiman went away and wrote really great award winning books like The Graveyard book.
James Robinson went away and wrote the screenplay for League of Extraordinary gentlemen.

It's definitely a Go. With Vertigo treated as a marginal imprint since the New 52 launch, and Toys like Swamp Thing and John Constantine taken away from her, Karen Berger definitely needed this "win". Gives her some cachet to keep Vertigo relevant and reason to keep it running with the amount of $$$ and eyeballs this brings back to Vertigo, which really only has the Fables franchise as a flagship currently. And as they learned with The Sandman, there are only so many spinoffs that can support that don't have the original creative team involved.

The story of what had happened to Morpheus to allow him to be so easily captured in THE SANDMAN #1, and why he was returned from far away, exhausted beyond imagining, and dressed for war. It was a story that we discussed telling for Sandman’s 20th anniversary… but the time got away from us. And now, with Sandman’s 25th anniversary year coming up, I’m delighted, and nervous, that that story is finally going to be told,” said Gaiman.

Ah, what was happening before Morpheus was captured...that's a very good story to tell, I was always curious, and definitely interested!
