It's crazy, and in my opinion NOT McFarlane's best work. If I were ever to be fortunate to be able to purchase a McFarlane page or cover It would most definitely be any of his work on Infinity Inc. That, to me, is his best work. I hope this trend keeps up, because I think that means more vintage work going a little cheaper. The trend lately is that newer art is getting bigger bids. That's fine by me...I like the silver/early bronze aged stuff"When not too many people can see we're all the same
And because of all their tears,
Their eyes can't hope to see
The beauty that surrounds them
Isn't it a pity".

I collect silver and golden age art and comics and this is really making those seem cheap! These prices are a bit shocking to me....more than the artists that actually created the characters.Comment

They shouldn't be. The late 80's/early 90's were the era of the designer comic.... and the rampant speculator. A lot of attention was paid to the investment potential of comics. (WAY too much, really.) Because of that, there's a perception of works from that era as investments; and perception is everything.

McFarlane's never been my cup of tea really, but I don't doubt that there are folks looking to purchase this because it banks on it's historical significance. Artistic merits aside, if there is one single cover that signifies the Image age of comics, it's this one that really kicked off the era in high gear. For a generation younger than most of us, this is the equivalent of Showcase #4 or Dark Knight Returns #1. Every generation has it's touchstones, just because it's not one of ours doesn't mean it isn't important to a thirty something with cash to burn.

20 years ago I would have really wanted an original Mcfarlane cover like that. Now my taste has changed so much I can barely look at any thing drawn by him without seeing the oodles of problems. (proportian, perspecive, anatomy, etc...)
I CAN understand why people would be jumping to buy it. Its a famous '90s cover from one of the most famous artist of the nineties. I think Eric Larsen is better than him now though. (Ironically, Sal Bushema was doing Spectacular Spiderman around this time, and is MUCH better in almost every way.)Comment
