    Green Lantern Rises as well

    GREEN LANTERN writer Geoff Johns:

“Absolute power corrupts absolutely--and the Guardians time is finally here. The Lantern titles spent the first year of DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 re-establishing themselves, but it all comes back together with year 2 starting with GREEN LANTERN #0 and leading into October's #13's - which share an amazing cover by Ivan Reis. In October, the Guardians' Third Army rises to replace the Green Lantern Corps - but how is horrifying and why will change the Guardians and their ancient mission forever. As we discover what the Third Army actually means, our strongest Lanterns are targeted for absolute destruction. From Atrocitus to Guy Gardner to our newest Green Lantern from Earth - who may have been wrongly chosen - all their darkest secrets and failures will come to light. What is Sinestro's ultimate fate? Who is this new Green Lantern and why was he chosen? What is the Third Army? What with Atrocitus sacrifice to take on the Guardians? What will Larfleeze give up to find the one thing he wants? What happens to Guy Gardner when he's targeted after Hal Jordan? And, most importantly, who is the First Lantern?”

Agreed. John's has been building to this for a loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong time. The "New 52" hiccup made me drop the title.

I actually prefer the self contained stories within the mainline Green Lantern title, like the Sinestro and Indigo Tribe arc this past year. That way I don't have to jump into books I haven't been following/dropped like GL Corps, New Guardians and Red Lanterns. War of the Lanterns and Blackest Night were kind of a pain that way. I'd rather just be reading the one title that Geoff Johns writes.

Ivan Reis is a beast. Would have loved to have seen Hal in the pinup.

I guessing Hal and Sinestro get bounced from the Corps in GL Annual 1.

                  Or maybe killed?

The GL film wasn't great, but it wasn't that bad, was it?

I still think the bleeding GL symbol deals more with the death of the Corps to set up this event and whatever the third army is going to be, but we'll see.

I'm still enjoying the Hal/Sinestro GL book to a degree, but I think it was a mistake to add a third GL book. I liked the dynamic with Guy and Kyle in GL Corps. I think you could throw John in there, too, and it would work. The other color corps work better in smaller doses, imo. I didn't make it past the first issue of the Red Lantern book.

While I think the general idea of the other Corps was a logical extension of the GL mythos and worked well through Blackest Knight, I'm tired that it remains the overriding focus of the franchise.

Again, Johns' book remains a good read, but in hindsight, I don't know if it might not have been better for Johns to turn GL over to another writer after Blackest Night. The Brightest Day series had very little to do with GL anyway. I don't know which writer, but it's just a thought.

I've never really liked GL, because of the whole "corps" thing. I'd like it a lot more if it just focused on Earth's GL.
The character would work so much better IMO if treated like a frontier sheriff of the old west...on his own, responsible for maintaining law and order in his "town" so to speak.
The constant presence of the corps waters the concept down and makes him not special. Kind of like if there were hundreds of Supermans and Batmans around all the time.

I agree with what's been said about overextending the concept with the various color corps....cool up til Blackest Night. But it's gotten stretched out and they need to pull it back. Originally there were 3600 members of the GL Corps, one for each sector. Then they doubled that, two per sector. Then add in some Red Lanterns, the Sinestro Corps, the Indigo Tribe, the Star Sapphires, the Blue Lanterns...thank Oa that Larfleeze is the only Orange Lantern!

Since way before Blackest Night ended I've been reading just the main GL title ( though I did get hosed buying that stupid Brightest Day 25-issue mini-series...)

But the "New 52" never touch the Green Lantern Books...they seem to simply ignore it.

For the most part, I agree. But Johns has been portraying Jordan as younger, less experienced, less sure of himself and more of a jerk in the New 52 Universe. It's more noticeable in the Justice League book, but it's there and less interesting to me. Hal as a screw-up is a retcon dating back to Emerald Dawn that just has never worked for me. You don't become a pilot of any sort much less in the Air Force by being a screw up.

The original concept of the GL Corps didn't have them working together all the time. Go back and read GL Nos. 6 and 11 from the 1960s and it was portrayed as a rarity that individual GL members met. Of course, all of that has changed which has worked in the series favor and to its detriment at times.

I think this may be one of them. It's kind of clear that Johns has lost some interest in Hal and has more in Sinestro and the other Corps he's created. Why not let him write a Sinestro Corps book and turn Jordan's book over to someone else or vice-versa. I'd like to see a Hal book that focuses on him as a GL both in space and on earth. While it's been eight or nine years since Johns brought the character back — and a really good 8 or 9 years — we haven't seen a lot of that in series. But, hey, they aren't producing the book just for me.

My thinking is that all the Earth GLs are becoming so marginalized by sharing titles that at some point interest is just going to fall off the cliff, kind of like in the 1990s when there were multiple GL titles and faded really quickly.

When was the last time Hal Jordan fought a bank-robber like character on Earth? With the exception of Black Hand, Johns really hasn't updated any of GL's classic foes.
