35 Years Ago: "Marvel Comics Super Special" #1 (KISS)
I was just getting into KISS in a big way when this comic came out. It blew my mind! I still have both of my KISS comics, although they are rather worse for wear, I read them to tatters. 35 years ago? Ouch!
Still have mine. They've held up pretty well. A great iconic comic of the 70's when the band was everything to a kid with the slightest of imagination could hope for. It's too bad kids today can not experience that period when nobody knew what they looked like. Such a different time and popularity. I've never seen anything like it before or since the 70's.
Whether they realized what they were doing or just stumbled into it, Kiss perfectly marketed themselves to pre-teen and teen boys. Kind of the opposite or anti Donnie Osmond/David Cassidy/Sean Cassidy. While their musicianship may have been questionable and their lyrics sophomoric to laughable, Kiss generally found a pretty good hook, and I'd sure rather listen to their songs than a lot of the stuff that gets radio play today. I'm probably just old, though. I'm waiting for the American Idol or Glee tribute to the hottest band in the land.
