    The walking dead phenomenon

Newsarama.com : KIRKMAN: Why TV's WALKING DEAD Translates to Comics Sales | The Walking Dead

The tv show has really translated into ridiculous success with the comic book that hasn't been seen since Batman. Perhaps it has something to do with fact that the show sticks broadly close to the comic, and allows new fans to "read ahead" of the show to find out what happens to the characters?

I can relate. But my POV is in regards to Anime/Manga. Seeing some Good anime has always provoked me into picking up the Manga series.
Mind you though I did say "Good".
Walking Dead so far IMHO is well a written show. I'd love to get the comics but that search has been coming up empty. Borders and such has come up empty for me.

Amazon was running one of the large compendiums at a pretty good sale for a while. Our local comic shop still stocks many of the trades.

The show hasn't Jumped the Shark yet. I was afraid after they showed Darbont the door season 2 would tank but the writing kept up. If they do as good a job next season adapting the best of the comic this show could sail to season 4 with neary a bump in the road.

Tho they do have shorter seasons than most mainstream network series, (13-16 episodes vs. 22-26 episodes), so they're able to stay on story better than other dramas. I think they would benefit from having longer seasons. Some of the shorter plot twists could be incorporated like where in the comic before they found the prison they tried staying in a small neighborhood during winter only to find it was infested when it got warmer. Something they will never use in the show now.

The terrific thing is that it might follow the basic spine and characters of the comic, but it does have it's own twists and turns... It's no secret that the prison is the major set piece for season 3, but undoubtably, like the farm, we're in for some surprises.

I recommend the compendium. It's a steal for fifty issues, and I would guess when they hit 100, the next one will come out as a way to catch up in only two volumes.

the other thing you could do is pick up the HC volumes which collect 12 issues each....that way you don't have to wait as long for the compnedium volumes. Amazon usually has them for around $20.00 to 22.00 each

              Hmmmm....

I dunno; I think a lot of it is timing. The book got washed into the zombie craze, and since it doesn't suck it rode the wave. It stays pretty close to established zombie-ology too; which would help new fans. (Not a lot of stuff to absorb no matter where you come in.) I think that's what's making the guys doing the "World War Z" movie nervous: the basic story deviates from the established zombie "survivours wander the wastes" trope.

You would think Marvel would be heavily pushing their Marvel Zombies series as "written by the Creator of Walking Dead", to cash in on this.
