Four New Titles Coming from "The New 52"

DC is cancelling 4 books (Justice League International is one, the other 3 haven't been announced) and replacing them with 4 new ones in September...

"The Phantom Stranger" by Dan Didio and Brent Anderson

"Sword of Sorcery"- brings back Amethyst, Princess of Gemworld & Beowulf

"Talon"- spinning out of the "Court of Owls" storyline over in "Batman"

"Team Seven"- detailing the early days of the DCnU featuring Amanda Waller, Steve Trevor, Dinah Lance, John Lynch, Cole Cash, Alex Fairchild and Slade Wilson.

While it's nice to see DC constantly trying to refresh it's line and add diveristy with different genres, the only one of these four I think I'll be willing to try is the "Sword of Sorcery" book.

Not a fan of Didio, so "Phantom Stranger" is out.

While I like "Batman" I really don't want to get in to all of these cross-over books again. It's nice to read "Batman" and just "Batman" and save money by not buying all of these other fringe projects.

And "Team Seven" just doesn't interest me...

I've always dug The Phantom Stranger and the fact that we know so little about him---he's like THE enigma of the DC Universe and I hope Didio doesn't f**k that up. I like the artist on it, but like Anthony, not a big fan of Didio, so I'll probably give this a looksee, but I don't know that I'll actually buy it or not...
sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.

Oh lordy...Didio writing the Phantom Stranger? You just know the new Blue Beetle is going to show up as the Stranger's "assistant" or something. Gonna have to regard all that as "Elseworlds" and ignore it.

I liked Amethyst & Beowulf in their previous incarnations, I'll see how the new version plays out. Beowulf should need little revamping since he was used so little.

"New" meaning not currently being published...

I kinda suspected; but it illustrates what bugs me about "mainstream" comics: it's the same ideas, stories, characters over and over again. You can pretty much guess what's coming back when, based on exposure and popularity.... and you can pretty much guess what the stories are gonna be like by comparing them to other trends in entertainment.

The only one I'm vaguely interested in based on Scott Snyder co-plotting is Talon.

I recently jumped on board Justice League dark based on Jeff Lemire's involvement, although I'm not sure this musical chairs approach will work for DC in the long run.

DC has a few prodigal characters like her, don't they? Bringing back Beowulf is an interesting twist.... he's always been a third-stringer. There are a bunch more that surface every so often I'd like to see. Space Cabbie is a personal fave. Hercules, the Atomic Knights, (original version anyhoo) Ambush Bug.... go out on a limb and suggest Super Hip, Stanley and his Monster, (ESPECIALLY since Foglio did such a great job of integrating them into the then new DC universe) Claw the Unconquered, the Green Team.... maybe rescue Prez and Brother Power from the unfortunate Vertigozations they had.... I don't really have much interest in another six Batman books, or another Hawkman reboot, or another round of musical Flashes, or musical Green Lanterns, or the latest revamp of Superman and his ilk.

Yeah.... but it'd be nice to see more of him.... especially in one of them uptight, gritty books that takes themselves WAY too seriously. (Which was kind of his purpose back in the day.)

                          >I think Kevin Smith changed their status quo in his "Green Arrow" run...

Didn't they dark and gritty them up? I heard something about that. It'd be a shame, since Foglio's miniseries kept a lot of the same feel of the original but integrated them into the DC Mopeyverse.... no small feat.

                          >He's recently been seen...including a cross-over with Dynamite's Red Sonja I think...

Really? I hadn't seen those. I liked the old DC book; he was kind of a generic barbarian guy, but they wrote him as completely humourless. Made him different. (Well.... until I read the old "Iron Jaw" stuff from Atlas; but Iron Jaw wasn't just humourless, he was a jerk. Which was also a nice touch.)

Smith introduced the idea that Stanley's grandfather was a devil-worshiper that was trying to bond with a demon. Since he had the same name as his grandson the incantation accidentally bonded "The Monster" with the little boy instead of the old man craving immortality. The old dude imprisoned his
grandson and tortured him, hoping to make The Monster come back. When The Monster did return he ate the grandfather....

It is pretty sucky that they are launching yet another Batman spinoff title as well as another Wildstorm related one...considering none of the other Wildstorm titles are doing well at all. And yet a few characters that seem to be perfect relaunch material still languish in limbo...Plastic Man, Kamandi, Secret Six, Metal Men, Doom Patrol, WW2 Sgt Rock, 'Mazing Man, The Warlord...

Hopefully the word & Sorcery book will be somewhat similar to All-Star Western with Amethyst as the main feature & Beowulf part of a rotating backup series, with Starfire, Claw, Nightmaster, Hercules Unbound, etc.
