A much better example of a well written Northstar story is John Byrne's two issues of Alpha Flight where he pretty much said it without saying it. As a kid it went totally over my head, and it was more about making Northstar a much more sympathetic and complex character than just being the team's jerk and primary source of conflict. It painted him as an "outsider" in a very relatable way.
This was the beauty of Alpha Flights initial innovative format of essentially solo stories that first year.

He's been really well written since rejoining the x-men a few years back, in Matt Fraction's run on X-men (that also introduced his boyfriend)
