Major DC Character To Be Outed As Gay

If you read the original article (below), you will see that DiDio did NOT say a MAJOR or PROMINENT character, he said:
And they are about to reintroduce a previously existing DC character who was previously straight and now will be “one of our most prominent gay characters.
Evidently, the MSN "reporter" only read the headline and adapted it to their own viewpoint for shock value. Aquaman, Wonder Woman, Hawkman, Nightwing, Jason, Tim are already around.
If you read the free comic book day
JLA comic, they already showed a brief appearance of a character returning to the JLA: VIBE (from JLA Detroit). My money is on him to be the newly Gay character.

Well, I'd have to retract everything I said if its not a major character."No. No no no no no no. You done got me talkin' politics. I didn't wanna'. Like I said y'all, I'm just happy to be alive. I think I'll scoot over here right by this winda', let this beautiful carriage rock me to sleep, and dream about how lucky I am." - Chris MannixComment

I almost mentioned Vibe, but he's not major. But if it's a former character, especially a long-dormant (dead) character like Vibe, I don't really have a problem with that.
Oddly enough, Vibe appeared in a 2-part DC Nation short this weekend that seemed to be poking fun at bad 80s cartoons. It was actually the most entertainment the character ever provided me.

Flash crossed my mind only because DiDio is obsessed with pushing Barry Allen on everyone. If he thought making him gay would give his profile a boost, he'd do it. Not sure what his marital status is in the DCnU, but it probably doesn't matter, since they're just making this up as they go along.

... It's amazing what you guys Blow up when I am at Work all day. Looks like DC won , yet again. To Bad they can't focus this "energy" on some great Hollywood Movies.... The Original Knight ..., Often Imitated, However Never Duplicated. The 1st Knight in Customs.

I'd be curious how our gay members here feel about this. Coming out is usually a very personal and cathartic decision, and DC sees fit to make it a press release rather than incorporate it into a storyline. Its totally cool and long overdue to have a gay character with some profile in the DCU, but it seems its for all the wrong reasons...hype and money. Guess those two concepts rule everything.
When Marvel and DC wanted to include black characters they created them, and they are still around four decades later. They didn't change up an existing character. I realize there weren't that many to alter at the time. Time will tell if any of this sticks, but I see this as blatantly exploitive. Maybe I'm way off on this...I almost had a psychic girlfriend but she dumped me before we met.
If anyone here believes in psychokinesis, please raise my hand.Comment

Somewhat ironic that this new DC, that seems to be sensationalizing this situation to the fullest as a marketing ploy first, and storyline second, has also chosen to promote Cyborg to the big leagues. Cyborg was one of the first black comic characters whose color wasn't worn on his sleeve. He wasn't an African prince and he wasn't "street" like Luke Cage. His parents were wealthy scientists. He defied black stereotypes in super hero comics. Think they may have learned something from one of their favorite characters, huh?

If it IS a Green Lantern, I'd probably put money on it being Kyle Rayner. I know he had a girlfriend, but his character has always struck me as being somewhat ambiguous in the sexuality department...sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.Comment

Perfect way to NOT regain the children's market. While I myself am not gay or of any particular minority I do see all of these stunts as exploitation and if I were in any of the aforementioned groups I'd be quite offended that my personal plight is nothing more than a novelty to try and snatch a headline.
The worst part IMO is that the headline itself is going to lead to nothing but 1.) tasteless gay jokes about the rest of the characters (keep your eyes on Letterman, Leno and Conan) but even more so 2.) leave this whole one note joke / stunt as the final word for folks who aren't really into comics. I.E. Welcome to a whole new stereotype for the comic book guy to which even the real Comic Book Guy would surely reply, "Worst... publicity... stunt... ever." It's almost as if you are in the mainstream eye if you do not have a gay character as part of your troop than you surely must be a hate filled homo-phobe. As if gay folks are accessories.
