appropriate age for watching modern hero movies

Anyone have a guess as to what the rating on the new Amazing Spiderman movie is going to be? G - not. PG - probably not. PG13 - I would guess here.

I like the spidey and parker scenes that have shown in the trailers, but the storyline and inevitable battle with the lizard look like they will probably be a bit much for my kids. I realize that there is a HUGE demo of adult fans that expect a certain amount of realism in their hero movies anymore, but I just wish there could be a little less kick *** and a little more iron giant so that I could enjoy these live action type movies with my kids while they are still kids.

Back to Toei for me, I suppose.

You can say that again, Hec. It grabs in a HUGE age range, so it's a "safe" rating....
sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.

Much of PG-13 is what PG used to be when we were kids anyhow. Sure there are bigger explosions, but the language is often the same. Although there is occasional F-bomb, like the famous scene in X-Men: First Class.

My son is now 10 and a half, and there are some scenes in the Iron Man films that I felt a little weird about watching with my kid, same for Green Lantern. The disturbing nature of the Nolan Batman films kept my son from seeing them theatrically. We watched both at home with me explaining what was coming next. I had no problems at all with Thor and Captain America. The most gruesome part of Cap is when the Hydra solider buys it through the propeller blade.

My daughter wants to see the Avengers. She's 4. She's seen parts of these movies on TV, but we keep her occupied elsewhere during potentially scary or disturbing scenes. I'm taking the boy to see Avengers first, and then we'll see if we take in another matinee on Sunday with the whole family.

$$ demo and sales. I get that part.
It is also a generation gap. But I sorely wish that a live action feature could be made with a 5-7 yo perspective in mind and not have that bracket handed down to TV programming.

I guess I'm gonna have to become a director.

btw: nice to see you around again, Hec. I didn't think you would miss out on the summer movie dialogs, but was beginning to wonder.
Hope your ma is doing well.

or maybe I'll exploit a demo that no one seems to be paying attention to. I am already an out of work director; no big change there.

I've never had to shield my kids (two daughters) from any of the super-hero or sci-fi stuff we have seen over the years. They've always understood that it's not real, just a movie. They've never had nightmares from any of the violence that might crop up in these type of movies. And as for language, they can hear f-bombs from me more than they will in the theatre for a few hours. 'Sall good...

The Avengers will be my son's first PG-13 movie in the theater, but he has what some of the other super-hero movies at home.
