    Nick Fury's Son

This seems like something that belongs as part of DC's New 52 and not Marvel...

Battle Scars revealed new character Marcus Johnson to be the son of Nick Fury, effectively positioning him as an equivalent to Samuel L. Jackson's African-American Nick Fury of Marvel's films.

Sometimes I think BOTH publishers have lost their collective minds regarding how they treat integral characters within the confines of their universes....
sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.

Fans of Nick Fury Sr should Really pick up the Secret Warriors collections. Best he's been written in years. Hoping they continue the current SHIELD series. They are just about at that point where Fury should be entering the picture.

It's agent Coulson making his Marvel U debut.

He's also appearing in the Ultimate Spiderman cartoon.

Perhaps they didn't think that his movie counterpart's thinning hair/receding hairline was "heroic" enough for the funny books...

I'm guessing so they don't have to pay the actor royalties for his likeness for every comic the features the character. The actor is voicing his character in the Spiderman cartoon show isn't he? So he gets a payday there if they are using his likeness.

Remember when they went into negotiations with Sam Jackson for a multiple picture deal for the Avengers franchise? I don't doubt that there is a great deal of leverage to be had from the fact that Marvel has been using his image in the Ultimates for years prior without paying him. Jackson may have reportedly been flattered by it at the time, but don't think for a second that once the lawyers and agents got involved, they didn't squeeze Marvel for that one.

And let's not kid ourselves... a Sam Jackson Nick Fury SHIELD movie and/or Back Ops/Secret Avengers movie is currently in the pipeline. Marvel as a company CAN'T waste an opportunity like that... The last time that happened with the first X-Men movie (and I think Blade), heads rolled at marvel and Joe Quesada stepped up and love him or hate him, his reign drives much of the content we are seeing at our local multiplexes in the past few years. Ironically, those rolling heads all seem to be calling shots at DC publishing In the past year.

It's the same reason why they are proceeding with Watchmen sequels, the amount of money pumped into the marketing machine for the movie has created a brand awareness that DC would be foolish to let it lay fallow. Is it the cart driving the horse? Yup. No doubt, but hopefully it also attracts the top tier talent. We'll see... I don't think Nick Fury Sr's going anywhere, and he hasn't been the head of SHIELD for most of the past decade anyways.

One of my favourite titles is SHIELD and writer Jonathan Hickman has said he'd like to get to Fury eventually, so 12 issues in, it looks like they are reaching that stage where Fury dovetails in from his recent Avengers mini set in the fifties. Garth Ennis is also writing a new Fury Max mini.

I love old Nick as much as anyone, but I think he and Nick Jr can exist alongside each other just like Jay Garrick and Barry Allan could for years, or Jay and Wally West.

                            Coming in May...
