Video review of Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m1BIrmE3nOA

This guy sums up perfectly how I feel about this series. After this morning's episode, I'm done watching this show. They've taken the core elements of what made Spider-Man great and flushed them down the toilet in favor of comic buffoonery aimed at five year olds.

Seeing Spider-Man envision plump, half-naked Iron Man Cupids was the last straw.

I gotta admit---the whole show went from "getting on my nerves" to "okay, maybe it'll grow on me" to "this is just downright stupid." Spider-Man, as a character and as an icon in the Marvel Universe and to the world at large, has been around longer than IRON MAN, so the very IDEA that Peter Parker, a briliiant science nerd would have any kind of "man crush" on Tony Stark is ludicrous!!! I'll give it one or two more episodes tops, but if it doesn't change course, and quickly, this is one ship that I will abandon....
sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.

Couldn't agree more. One of the things that always made Peter Parker was how mature and responsible he was for his age. They've turned him into an immature bumbling idiot.

You guys realize that aiming a tv show on the disney channel to an audience of 5 year olds isn't necessarily a bad thing when it comes to Spider-man right?

I mean I loves me my 60's Bakshi Spidey, and Spiderman and his Amazing Friends, but they hardly hold up well today if I were watching it critically as an adult. We all have to discover our childhood love of Spiderman somewhere. He's a strong enough character that multiple incarnations and interpretations like they have with Batman allows for enjoyment of the character for all ages and generations. As long as With Great Power comes Great Responsibility pervades.

I've only seen one episode so far, but it obviously hits the right notes with it's intended kids audience if my niece and nephew are any indication. I like the humour as well, which is an important part of the character. I think this version is better than Spectacular Spider-man.

Between the Ben 10 Man of Action guys, and Paul Dini, it's got some pretty good 'toon pedigree.

And c'mon, you can't say that in the earliest days of Spider-man, particularly the Lee and Ditko, he wasn't screwing up all the time before putting things right. It was the formula that made the character so great! That was what really set him apart from other heroes of the time... he was a kid/teenager, and made mistakes, but did the responsible thing in the end, even it if cost him on a personal level. This isn't much different from what I can see in the first episode. The cocky arrogance is part of the overcompensation when he puts on the mask, to hide the fact that he's a kid pretending to be a (Spider) MAN who doesn't know what he's doing. Screwing up is part of the learning and growing up process, and most of the best stories aimed at kids follow that format. Fiction aimed at an adult audience tends to skew the other way (stick to your guns, don't adapt/change/compromise, you will persavere), and rightly so as Ditko himself pointed out... once they aged Peter into adulthood, you are less likely to accept any kind of bumbling on his part. So I completely understand why folks here can't get into this show. We (grown ups) are not the intended audience!

That's what I was thinking. (I know, I added so much to the discussion. )

Yep! you hit it right on the nose, my 5 year old daughter absolutely loves it, soon as it comes on she wants to sit with Daddy and watch it. that's the intended audience, It's silly but I get where they're going.

My son loves it. I think it goes a little too overboard, but I understand it's not for me. With all the angst in comics nowadays, I can appreciate it's light-hearted direction.

I don't think I'm going to go out of my way to watch it. I'm fine with it being aimed at kids. They need to be introduced to comics somehow. We had the Superfriends and Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends and things of that nature to get us involved. It's not ruining Spidey, it's actually keeping him alive so a new generation can enjoy him.

On a similar note, my niece loves the new Green Lantern cartoon. She thinks Kilowag is hilarious. Did any of us think we'd see the day where a 4 year old girls favorite superhero is Kilowag? I know I didn't. It's pretty cool.
