i remember that Batman #1 spring issue being for sale at a comic show I went to in the late 80's for 4k. wish my teenage self had had the cash at the time cause i sure could use the 35k that issue is going for there. is it really worth that much?

that particular restored copy is worth approx $12K... an unrestored 4.0 would sell for 40-45K (in fact I just sold one for $45K), but not a restored copy

Those are spectacular! #9 is probably one of my favorite comic covers or all-time. A friend of mine had a really beat up copy - but it still looked fantastic to me.

There is a degree of wish fulfillment in going on, to want something other than a kid's mundane life of schoolwork and chores.... why not go off and live with a millionaire, become a superhero, drive the batmobile etc.

Harry Potter works the same way, as kidlit... popular fiction for youngsters is a ghetto of plucky orpans making their way in the grown up world. Hugo, another recent example. Snow White as the classical example that we are being bombarded with right now in movies and TV.
Yeah - exactly! Luke Skywalker, Superman, Spider-Man, Tintin, Tarzan, a bunch of Charles Dickens stories --- all the way back to Moses and probably before that. It's so prevalent that on some level being orphaned must be part of the fantasy we identify with.
