Legends of the Dark Knight— JIM APARO

Legends of the Dark Knight— JIM APARO is in comic shops on Wendesday and Amazon shortly there after and I can't wait. This reprints stories from Brave and Bold 100-102 and 104-122.

Loved the way Aparo drew Batman and during this period, he just seemed to nail every character who teamed up with the caped crusader.

team-ups include Green Lantern, Green Arrow, Black Canary, Joker, Metamorpho, Teen Titans, Deadman, Sgt. Rock,Demon, Wildcat, Mr. Miracle, Aquaman, Metal Men, Atom, Spectre, Man-Bat, Kamandi,Swamp Thing.

These stories were reprinted in a Showcase edition a few years ago, but I'll be glad to see them in color again.

I also noticed on Amazon that DC has quite a few more archives scheduled for this summer: Including Legion,Flash, Batman, Green Lantern and the 2nd Wolfman and Perez omnibus. I still need to pick up the Justice League Archives that came out earlier this month.

To me, Aparo was the definitive Batman artist of my youth, just as Curt Swan defined Superman.

wish I could afford them. Aparo's Superman was great, too, though he didn't draw him that much. That Luthor just looks evil.

Dick Dillion was a work horse during that time period on JLA, but it would have been cool to have seen Aparo do the JLA.

I remember meeting him back in 1992/1993 at Chicago Comicn. Back when it was in the Hyatt (I think it was the Hyatt). Anyway....he had a table next to Doug Moench and they both signed right around 100 books each for me. For free. Seriously. I was like 21 then and within the next year my wife was pregnant and I had to sell my whole comic collection. I really wish I still had those signed Brave And The Bold comics.

I have a tough time saying Aparo is my "favorite" but he is a darn close 2nd to Neal Adams when it comes to Batman.

By the way, what are "Original Production Art Pages"? Not quite the same as the original covers (Cause otherwise $60 for that Batman/Superman/Luthor cover is a steal)

Wow, I had no idea this book was coming out. Glad to see DC's TPB dept. hasn't forgotten the company's history.

Aparo is one of THE Batman artists of all time. For a character with no shortage of great, famous artists, that is really saying something. He probably logged more pages with the character than any other artist since Sheldon Moldoff.

The TwoMorrows biography is supposed to be back on track for later this year as well.

Before I looked at the auctions on the pages, I thought they were original art. They are basically high-end copies of the original art, used as proofs before before the comics were printed. I'm sure they look good framed, but personally, I don't see the value in them, particularly $200. To me color proofs would be more desirable, but to each his own.

Jim Aparo defined the Batman I grew up with. I think he's a top notch artist and an early inspiration to me when I started drawing.

When the 90's hit and everyone was cross hatching like mad, I was still using simple lines and feathering. My friends used to tell me to finish my pictures. I look at them all confused and reply that it was finished. At that point they would either point out I didn't do any "shading" (what my best friend thought cross hatching was for) or just drop it.

Absolutely! For me, his rendition WAS Batman. And let's not forget his awesome Aquaman.

I know this is later art from Aparo but I don't care for it...his style changed slightly.
His Joker looks different. He was inked by Bill Seinkiewicz toward the end of his career
                        if I recall....Not a good combo.

Not to mention his Spectre and Phantom Stranger. His Deadman was good too...

In the 70s, his art had a Neal Adams influence/ "realism" that became less rendered and even more cartoony in the late 80s and 90s. He remained an excellent storyteller, but his 70s work was my favorite — Aquaman, Deadman, Spectre, Phantom Stranger — It was all fantastic.
