New York Tri-State area NYCBM show this weekend...

Just giving a heads up to all you comic book people in the tri-state area...New York Comic Book Marketplace Comic Con:

NYCBM Guests s New York Comic Book Marketplace

I can say that there is NO WAY IN HELL that I am paying for Stan Lee's autograph. I do want to get a couple of sketches from George Perez and Joe Sinnott. Trying to figure out what I'd like to get done by each. I'm thinking The Thing by Sinnott. Perez...I'm torn. I don't know what I want to get done. I was thinking maybe the Iron Maiden from Thunder Agents...but then I was thinking something that he's never been asked to do before. One of the first things George Perez did for Marvel was the Beatles Super Special:

I'd love to get maybe a Pepper sketch. I'll probably ask if he'd do it as a commission...we'll see. BTW, it's only $12 to get into the show.

You'll probably have to take some reference for Perez. That's been a while, Berto. Joe Walsh said it best when asked about the Eagles roadies keeping a stack of records on the road and digging out old tunes for them to play. He said," Just because you wrote it doesn't mean you can play it."

    Classic Joe.
I almost had a psychic girlfriend but she dumped me before we met.

If anyone here believes in psychokinesis, please raise my hand.

Soooooo True. Might have to stick with the tried and true then with George.

I actually won Stan Lee's biography DVD from Superherohype back in 2002 when that site was holding a contest. You had to write Stan Lee a short story about what Spider-man meant to you. Stan Lee read all the entries and picked mine! This particular copy was personally autographed by him. It's something I treasure immensely. I'm glad I was able to connect with Stan the man on our favorite subject.

At first glance, that piece looked like it could have been done by Jim Starlin...

Found out that George Perez is doing head sketches for $25 at the show. Because it's a one day show he's only doing head sketches. $25 is still a freakin' great price for ANY sketch from Perez. Now I gotta figure out what I want done. One of these would do it for me:

            Wonder Woman
            Deathstroke Terminator
Topaz or Queen Topaz from Ultraforce

Anyone else have a suggestion for a head sketch?

Got back from the show about 1 1/2 hours ago and have to say it was the BEST comic show I've been to in years. What a concept, actual COMIC BOOKS at a comic book show. You can't really say that about the big time EXPERIENCE shows these days like the Javits show or the SDCC show. There were a lot of comic book dealers and it looks like they are finally backing off of the CGC crap. It was just a fun day to go and find some comics and toys...VINTAGE comics and toys to boot. Met our own Wee67 (Bill McFarland) at the show and he definitely went home with a whole lotta books. I mainly went there for autographs and a sketch from George Perez. Two hours on George Perez line...and it was well worth it. Here's the sketch I got for $25:

I decided to go with a character that George created and he was kind of taken aback when I said who I wanted him to sketch. BTW, George is UP THERE with Comic Book guys to meet. Very cordial and just a great person to talk to. Same goes for Herb Trimpe. Talked with Herb for almost a half hour about baseball/the movie Money Ball. Got a beautiful sketch from Herb but really can't show it just yet cause it's a belated B-Day present for my Big Bro.

Picked up 3 still sealed Hardcovers for $5 each. Legacy of Doom, Secret Invasion 1 and 2 with the Avengers. Can't beat that. Also picked up Wave 4 of the Retro Action Mattel figures for $10 each. Couldn't pass that up...and I also wanted a set to open. Just a fun day. Thanks to NYCBM for bringing back an ACTUAL COMIC BOOK SHOW to NY.

BTW, does anyone have any previews of the Worlds Finest by George Perez that DC is going to put out? I don't know if there's a thread about it already. George mentioned it as I was getting the sketch done. Is it George's layouts with someone else's finishes like that awful Superman Book?

Here's a pic of George doing a sketch for a guy all the way from Boston with his son:

As much you hate coming to NJ I'll pass this along anyway. There's a new show starting in Secaucus this month and the guy running it says there will be two full rooms of dealers and all tables are already sold out. Sounds like his regular one room shows which are great but with two rooms it should be fantastic.

That's the Hotel that the Beatlefest's are in every year...I think. Might have to check it out.

BTW, here's a pic off of the NYCBM facebook page of a display with the Marvel Marx figures...just in case there were some non believers of the painted ones...here they are in GLORIOUS COLOR

Wish I could afford them...I guess the picture will have to do for now

It was good seeing you there and I have to whole-heartedly agree- it was a really great comic book show. I did not manage to pick up the last book I need to finish off my Avengers collection (#1), but I felt awash in 70's goodness. The dealers there seemed to really want to move their merchandise.

And Berto wasn't kidding about my stack of books- I stopped myself after grabbing over 80 books at one dealer alone! He had a VERY healthy selection of $1 comics, many from the 70's and in decent shape. It hard for me to resist anything with a 40-cent or less cover price and this guy had oodles!
                          WANTED - Solid-Boxed WGSH's, C.8 or better.

Not to usurp the thread, but another great quote from Joe was on Bob & Tom one morning. He said he knew he toured with Black Sabbath back in the early 70s. He and Ozzy were talking about it. Neither remembered it, but thhey had the posters to prove it.

As for Perez, he is the real deal. You'll never meet a nicer person at a con. And the man has more talent in his little pinky than 75% of the comic industry has in their whole bodies.

I just got his Modern Masters volume, and he comments on how he's got a rep for being so nice at cons. He chalks it up to a pinched nerve he had shortly after he started to get popular at Marvel in the late 70s. He couldn't draw for several weeks due to pain in his arm and hand, and thought his career may have been over before it began. His doctor finally pinpointed it to a pinched nerve going from his neck to his hand. The problem resolved itself, but Perez has been very grateful for his career since then, since he thought he was going to lose it!!!

Great sketch. I cherish my Nightwing head sketch.

Funny thing is George needed a reference for the headband that she wears...So I said "No problem...I have an Ultraforce Poster I'd like to get signed..." Took it out and he used it as a reference. I love it when a plan comes together
