What was the last really great book you read?

I'm hip deep in reorganizing and cataloging my comics so I've been thinking about this a lot today...

I remember certain comics from when I was a kid that stick out above the rest as being a great story or important somehow. Comics that I'll never ever part with.

Some of those being: Batman The Cult, The Killing Joke, Spider-man vs Wolverine, Batman Year 3, various single issues of comics like Transformers #16 etc.

But what was the last really great one you read? How long ago was it? It seems as I've been going through my collection, I remember a lot of covers but rarely what happened on the inside. It's all a blur. Until Brave and the Bold #33 starring Wonder Woman, Batgirl, and Zatanna. That's the last REALLY GREAT book I think I read. Rarely does a comic book make me cry. This one did.

I have a special wooden comic box that my father made me and I put all the really greats in there even if they belong in other sets. I found this floating around in my regular collection and I think it's going to be upgraded to the good box.

    Tell me about your favorites!

Hellboy has been a great ride and will end up being one of the all time big stories when it is finished. New Frontier and All Star Superman are two that I will keep and reread a lot.

I don't know if you mean old or recent, so here a bunch of both.

      The Punisher: Welcome Back Frank
      Green Lantern: Secret Origin
Captain America & Bucky: The Life Story of Bucky Barnes
      Spider-ManDoctor Octopus: Out of Reach
      The Invincible Iron Man
      The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes
(And I know people might disagree with me but I like it)The New 52: Justice League
      The New 52: Batman
      The New 52: Green Lantern

      For single issues:
Captain AmericaThor: The Mighty Fighting Avengers
Target Presents: Reading to the Rescue!

      Non comic-book charcters:
      The Mis-Adventures of Adam West

The Detective Comics run by Scott Snyder right before the DCnU (or DCpU) started was excellent. It featured the return of Jim Gordon's son, who is a psychopath. Pretty riveting storyline.

I thought Green Lantern 43, the origin of Black Hand was pretty good, too.

Daredevil has been a delight to read, lately. the recent issue with the bus wreck was really nice.

I also liked that issue of Brave and Bold you mentioned above very much as well as the Dr. Fate/Hal Jordan team-up.

Hickman's Fantastic Four, Fraction's Iron Man and Brubaker's Cap have been solid to me.

Flash has been the most surprisingly good book for DC since the relaunch. Love the cool layouts.

Reis' work on Aquaman is always enjoyable.

It could be I'm getting to be a curmudgeon or just extremely jaded, but I'm finding it hard to pick up books that I long to read again. Here's my list going back some years.

Kingdom Come - Nothing will ever top this for me. I read this at least twice a year.

JLA/Avengers - My two favorite teams drawn by my favorite artist. This was made just for me.

Green lantern Rebirth - I pretty much like the entire Johns run and I do read the collected trades regularly. Didn't like Blackest Night much, but the rest including Secret Origin are just stellar.

The Dark Knight returns - I was the only one of my circle of geek friends who liked this. The art was definitely stylized in my mind, attrocious to others, but I really was into the story more than the art, which is an extreme rarity.

Superman/Batman - The early arcs are awesome. Loeb and McGuienness are a terrific pair of storytellers. The best part was reading their thoughts and how they perceive each other and how they are more alike than not. Great stuff.

That's the short list that immediately comes to mind.
I almost had a psychic girlfriend but she dumped me before we met.

If anyone here believes in psychokinesis, please raise my hand.

            Archie meets KISS

            No, just kidding...

Gonna go with Ed Brubaker's CRIMINAL: LAST OF THE INNOCENT or FATALE, Terry Moore's ECHO or RACHEL RISING, or THE WALKING DEAD.
I also kinda enjoy Mike Allred's I ZOMBIE.

i have really been digging the Walking Dead series, which i have been picking up in the HC trades.
last great Superhero read....hmm, i guess Darkest Night. really fun read. basic comic lines though would have to be Kevin Smiths run on Green Arrow and the storyline from when he left till about when GA married Dinah

Just re-read Part Two of Whitman's Buck Rogers movie adaption. Hard to beat Al McWilliams. Also read issue #56 of DC's Star Trek with Gray Morrow, another favorite artist.

The only new comic I've bought in the past year or so is Dynamite's Lord of the Jungle issue #1. I thought it was pretty decent.
