So what's the deal with Captain Action?

With the new toyline coming out, I wanted to look at some of the comics, in which CA is a hero in his own right. While the old series touched on it a little, and the new series explains HOW he is able to impersonate other heroes, it doesn't really explain WHY he does it.

What are your thoughts? Why would a guy who's a hero on his own NEED to impersonate say, Superman or Spider-Man? What purpose would it serve? The inclusion of secret identity masks with the new figures raises even more questions, such as how he knows the identity of Spider-Man.

In the new series from Moonstone he's a secret agent for the government, and most of the heroes are alien invaders in disguise.
In the old DC series he never changed looks, he changed powers depending on need by using "magic coins". Later on he settled into only enhanced strength & speed.

as much love as I have for Captain Action, that has always been his flaw, in both play value and just simple story logic... even for the kids playing with the figure.

Everyone knows Peter Parker is Spiderman, Clark Kent is Superman etc. At the end of the day, he's just a guy PRETENDING to be Batman or The Phantom or Aquaman.

That is why Megos got it right. Batman can interact with Superman... you don't have to switch outfits or buy multiple Captain Action figures to assemble the Avengers or Justice League.

Any revival of Captain Action would have to target a purely collectors market IMHO.

The new series does a well enough job of trying to make sense of it without involving other heroes (other than the Phantom).

I think most people are unaware of this little seen series from the eighties...

and all story logic aside, I do have a fondness for the original DC comic (Wally Wood!).
