Great anniversary issue...I always thought it should have been larger sized like some of the others from the same time...

sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.

The cap to the great Stern/Byrne era of Cap. I love this issue. To me it IS the definitive Cap origin. took the various tellings and made them all fit.

Still love the Baron Blood two-parter. The climax is just so friggin' awesome.

Yeah, the Stern/Byrne run is my favorite on Cap. Much of Brubaker's work on the character in recent years has been really exceptional, but those Stern/Byrne issues really made me fall in love with Cap.

Cap 255 is not just the definitive Cap origin, but I can't think of a better single-issue retelling of any super-hero origin than that issue.

The Baron Blood issues are fantastic. When I first saw how skinny Byrne drew Blood I was a little frustrated because of how he was drawn by Robbins in Invaders, but the skinny-hungry-almost-reptilian look worked great for the story. And, yes, I don't know if Cap has made better use of his shield than in the climax.

I also liked the Cap for president story, too.

Wow! I have always considered this as well as the Guy named Joe story from around ther same time and the Cap runs for President and the multiparter where Cap fights a giant Robot of himself to be some if not the best stories of that era, This orign story had the best cover and interpitation of his origin ever.
Non of that crap they are doing today ,which in my option are just rehashes of past stories with a twist.
            I miss real good comics.

                  Definitely a great issue.
As were the two with Baron Blood.

And, yes, I don't know if Cap has made better use of his shield than in the climax.

I still remember in the late 80s when I acquired those issues from a comic shop. When I read the ending, and the infamous "chuk", I was floored. I don't think there is any single moment in comics that is as viscerally cool as that moment. I never thought of Cap's shield in quite the same way again. BUT, it did not defame or taint the character in any way.

Heck, no. As a human and an American, even if on British soil, it is a right and duty to lop off the head of vampires, particularly Nazi vampires in purple spandex.

I remember I had Cap #255 and gave it away. Years later I found out how valuable it was when I tried to re-purchase it, (probably in the 1990's), due to it not only being a Byrne art issue but a Frank Miller cover.
