I am so sorry. Whoever did that is pond scum, plain and simple. But don't sell yourself short... that was a gorgeous painting and it certainly would be worth something.

I hope you get the painting back.

This person needs to have their hands pierced with dozens of super sharp needles, even if only for ten minutes. Not very deep, just enough to break skin and draw some blood. Oh, and cause pain of course.

Man, this news does suck. Whomever stole it, for whatever reason, will hopefully have a change of heart and maybe, just maybe they will return it to you. I'd put up some flyers on the window of the convenient store (if they'll let you), telling the whole community what happened and that, if whomever stole it would simply return it, no questions asked, you would consider the issue closed. It would be a hard thing to do to not want to beat the living snot out of the thief, but then you would be getting down to their level and you're way better than that, my friend....
