If we are talking about some good ol' fashion Superhero adventures, there is walking dead creator Robert Kirkman's Invincible, available in omnibus edition. He's got a fun little superhero universe going on if you like the kind of interactions you see in WD with capes instead of Zombies.
Invincible Ultimate Collection 1 Hardcover by Robert Kirkman | eBay
INVINCIBLE: THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION VOL 1 HC KIRKMAN | eBay
Invincible: The Ultimate Collection, Vol. 2, Robert Kirkman, Ryan Ottley, Bill C (9781582405940) | eBay
INVINCIBLE VOL #3 ULTIMATE COLLECTION HC Robert Kirkman | eBay

Most cost effective way to catch up.

I frankly, feel a bit adrift...I collect only the oddballs from Marvel (Alpha Flight, monster comics like Werewolf By Night, Tomb of Dracula) and DC (Doom Patrol only from them).

Both Alpha Flight and Doom Patrol were canceled and I hated what the new, rebooted DC did with Cliff Steele (Robotman of the Doom Patrol)...Absolutely horrible dreck that bore little resemblance to the real Cliff Steele's character. I loved Spider-Woman back in the day, but what Bendis has done to her churns my stomach. I know people have complained before that Marvel and Dc are ruining their characters, well I personally feel they've gone even further in making many of their characters unrecognizable. I recently bought Legion of Monsters, which was so-so.

        >So what other options are there out there maybe, kinda similar to the above?

Hmmmm.... I would suggest hitting the book stores and having a look. TONS of stuff out there. I'd also suggest trying some stuff you'd never think to read. If you're getting bored with the Big Two and a Half, it might be time to change the mix.... and now is the time to do it. Comics for every palette are readily available.

If you MUST go all superhero, I'd recommend "Zot!" It's the same, but different. Try some of the 2000AD collections too; can't be beat for over the top action. And if you've never rwad it; "Grimjack" is a must!

You can't go wrong with: What If's, Marvel Two-in-One and Marvel Team-Ups...

          I'd also like to recommend:

          Jon Sable
          Astro City
          Concrete
          Planetary
          The Authority
          Powers
          Wanted
          The Maxx

...I know there is more but I don't have my comics with me to browse...

Forget "a bunch" go for the whole sets. Two In One is 100 issues and seven annuals while Team up was 150 issues and 7 annuals. I had a ton of fun reading and acquiring those titles. Most can be had on the super cheap as well except for the first few issues.

Also fun are The Defenders up until 125 when they disband the original team. 1 annual and 5 Giant size issues. I need one or two giant size sto complete my own run but I have the rest and can vouch for the enjoyabilty.
Other cool team ups the 70's run of Brave and the Bold

and I'd say the first 55-60 issues of DC Presents.

The list goes on but those are good reads to start.
