Trying to get a gauge on Neal Adams Original Art...

What would the original art for the Splash Page of Batman 234 go for? It's the 1st appearance of Two Face in the Silver Age:



I've seen convention sketches of his go for prices anywhere from $500 - $1000...but the splash of 234 is a major part of comic history.

I can't imagine the owner of it wanting to sell it unless he was in need of money.

Nothing against Perez and Byrne, but you see good but very common pages by them going for several grand.

Adams probably only had about 10 or 12 years of work 1967-78 for Marvel and DC and after about '75 most of that was covers. Point being, there's not a ton of his work out there.

I probably shouldn't have even replied to your post because this is just a guess, but I'd say $14 to 20 grand if not more. But, condition and how bad the owner needs to sell, would be key.

That's kind of where I was thinking. I saw this page from Avengers 93:

Crucial storyline in the Avengers...but IMHO, not even close to the first appearance of Two Face in the Silver Age.

I saw those 2 and they are great gauges on the "Power" of Adams work.

BTW, there is NO WAY I could "play with the big boys" art wise. I am definitely a small potatoes type of collector. Hell, I'm not even in the ballpark for one of Neal's Con Sketches.

Asking price for this cover is $27,500... Seems a bit high. It's nowhere near as iconic as the two face one.

Always hard to gauge this type of stuff. I guess it all comes down to how bad a few bidders want it (if it is available at auction). Like others have said, a good gauge would be to see what other items have sold for in the past, look at the subject matter, and it should give you at least a range of expected value.

It really depends on what is on the splash, art wise. Historical significance followed by artist will only get you so far.

I'm thinking that would be the kind of cover you bring to Heritage auctions where they can pimp the heck out of it in their catalogue and online to maximize how much they can get for it.
