    RIP Sheldon Moldoff

I didn't see anything about Shelly's passing here. I found out on Saturday, just a few hours before it was reported that Ralph McQuarrie had died. I really liked Shelly's version of the Bat-family.

One of last early Golden Agers who were still around. I can't really add anything that Evanier didn't cover, other than this odd factoid: Shelly Moldoff suggested the idea of the "Legends of the Super Heroes" TV specials. So you can add that to his credits...or blame him for them.

If you look at his Batman work, it's easy to dismiss his style as naive and cartoony. But just look at his early Hawkman stuff and other covers. Moldoff could do a great Alex Raymond bit. He was one of the better artists with technical skills back in the Golden Age when some guys got work because they could hold a pencil for 8 hours. Really good stuff there.

I'm glad he got some recognition later in life. I got to meet him at a con or two. I only wish I had forked over the dough for a sketch.

I think that's what I liked about his art - clean and simple.

Moldoff's Batman work is almost like that of an animator. Clean, and very strictly constructed. His Batman and Robin always looked consistent. Of course, he was ghosting Kane, so he limited his style to what Kane could do. But the look was appealing for sure. It worked for over 20 years!

A great golden age talent he was. Not many were good enough to keep on going into the silver age and beyond but he could and continued being one of the better ones. Losing to many good artist lately :(
                  Bye Mr. Moldoff

The guy never lost a beat. Which can't be said of many Golden, Silver or even Bronze Age artists!
