    Carmine Infantino Catwoman original art

Carmine Infantino Original Art Catwoman from Batman the Animated Series inked | eBay

Didn't realize Infantino was involved with DC still during the Batman TAS era. The Bruce Timm look seems so far away from his distinct style.

I didn't either until I got "The Amazing World of Carmine Infantino" book at a discount store several years back. He apparently did a lot of style guide work like this, and even some Golden Books in BTAS style.

Nice piece. To me, it doesn't look at all typical of late-Infantino style stuff...
sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.

Yeah, it's much cleaner than his style was post-1960s. Maybe someone else inked it?

I bought that book from him when he was in Toronto. I wished I had the $90 to get an original sketch inside it from him but I didn't. He still signed it which is neat.

Infantino's style was always pretty loose. Folks like Giella and Anderson just "reigned him in" back in the 60s. While I will admit that he lost some of his touch in later years, a lot of his work has been victim of bad inkers. I saw a recent piece of his inked and uninked, and the inker totally slaughtered what was there on the page. Now given, there were a lot of sketchy lines to choose from, but the inker opted just to make up his own lines. The result was neither Infantino...nor good.

Infantino has had an interesting career with a multitude of illustrating styles that have changed throughout his career. In my opinion, his late 60's and early 70's work is among his finest. In the late 70's and early 80's however, he had a fascination with drawing perspectives that put you right up character's noses. It got so odd that it became the death knell for a title if he started illustrating the book. He did that with both the Flash and the original run for Nova.

I think that was him doing lots of close-ups to avoid a lot of background detail. In his book, he all but comes out and says he was just doing comics for money and no joy after be fired as publisher of DC. They were assignments at that point, nothing more.

That's why I suggested that someone else might have inked it because at first look (maybe even second) I don't see Infantino in the sketch.

Gil Kane's early GL work and late GL work in the 1960s almost seem like a different artist because of the difference in the way it was inked.

I think that was him doing lots of close-ups to avoid a lot of background detail. In his book, he all but comes out and says he was just doing comics for money and no joy after be fired as publisher of DC. They were assignments at that point, nothing more.
Infantino's art on his second Flash stint certainly lacked passion, imo. It was a big shock to me going from Irv Novick's very clean approach to Infantino's stylistic approach. I held on to the end of the title out of habit, but never truly enjoyed the Flash the last several years of its publication and Infantio's art was the reason.

No doubt the guy was a pro. His work from the 40s-60s makes him one of the all-time greats — some really beautiful work particularly when inked by Murphy Anderson — and DC did some pretty cool things when he was in charge.

DC reprinted the last few years of Infantino's run on Flash in a Showcase b/w edition and upon scanning through it, Infantino's work isn't as "bad" as I thought it was as a teen, but compared to his Flash and Adam Strange work in the 60s, it just wasn't as exciting or the right feel to me.
