    "schools" of comic art

Thought this might make for some interesting and lively discussion. I believe Scott Mccloud covered some similar ground in understanding comics. Do any of the artists here feel like they fall into or well out of any of these camps themselves? What's overlooked? (this is mainstream superheroes of course)

    >What's overlooked?

The "photoplate/pseudo-cellshaded/traced/referenced out the wazoo" technique of the last decade, and the 90's "flat like theater skene" style used by many Vertigo guys.

Just curious...what does the early to mid 80's style of BWS (Barry Smith) fall under?? Cause I'm still trying to figure that one out. I think he's gone through all the styles. He started as a "Bullpen" type when he was on Shield...and then went to his own style when he did Conan...and then I have no clue what his later stuff went to. IMHO his BEST!!! work ever is my bro's favorite BWS art...Avengers 100. That's like the in-between stage for BWS. Where it really wasn't Conan and it really wasn't his later stuff. The panels from that book like a cross between comic art and paintings. When you can see beads of sweat on the Hulk and almost "feel" them it brings it to a whole new level in art...especially for comic art.

He really has gone through quite an evolution as an artist hasn't he? I thought he just exploded on stuff like X-men, Machine An and Weapon X. I think he's an artist that has been able to really show off hs chops as printing got better. I really don't blame him at all for insisting his new stuff be printed in glossy tabloid sized format, even if that decision hurt commercially with such a high price point.

For any fans of his work on the X-Men life death issues starring Storm, he concluded the Trilogy in the OGN Adastra in Africa (making Adastra a new character in place f Storm).

Given all the wonderful stylized design elements of his work, I'd say he preceded Art Adams, although begun closer to halfway between Neal Adams and Jack Kirby.

This doesn't do it justice but little touches like the leaves shadowed across the Hulks frame where the kind of details he started to add to his pencils right around this transitional period:

I tried to take a tour of Rob Liefeld's art school but the architecture was wrong. The entrance was 20 feet up and off- center.
I almost had a psychic girlfriend but she dumped me before we met.

If anyone here believes in psychokinesis, please raise my hand.

There was an editorial written in CBG a long time ago by either Mark Evanier or Tony Isabella about Liefelds art and it had Cap standing next to a 12 foot tall lamppost...and he was the same height as the lamppost. I can't believe that he is getting work again. There are sooooooo many more sliver and bronze age artists that can still draw that can't get work because of DBags like Liefeld. Just pathetic.

I consider BWS one of the best comicbook artist of all time.

Ligne claire is a specific and easily identifiable school, but not really used in Western superhero comics. I like the clarity and conciseness.

There is the Frank Cho/Terry Moore/Amanda Conner school of "drawing women that look human" school that's often over looked.

BWS always for me gave off a Euro vibe in his art, looked more like it belonged in Métal Hurlant than in an American comic......

Adam Hughes is more of a Ginger artist, whereas Moore is more of a Mary Ann artist.

Adam Hughes falls in with Frank Cho. Terry Moore falls in with Amanda Conner.
