sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.Comment

On the latest Word Balloon podcast Marty Pasko postulates that the DC relaunch and redesigns of the costumes have to do with the trademarks and copywrites running out and coming under legal scrutiny.
So we can blame the loss of the trunks on lawyers.Comment

I would think DC would have to do a lot more pre-emptive "damage control" other than removing red trunks....if that's all they think stands in the way between them maintaining the copyrights they're nuts. I mean "Clark Kent" and "Lois Lane" go all the way back to "Action Comics" #1... I'd be more worried about those aspects of the legend instead of red underwear...Think OUTSIDE the Box! The anatomy on this image is wrong from that point......you would not be able to see that much of his pelvis unless he was sitting down.....which most likely is how this posed was achieved, Looks like the artist was sitting on the crapper, when he took the reference pic.....
Oh and this is a CaCa Idea.......Comment

Nope. It's all about the trunks. Superman had to lose his shorts to make sure DC didn't lose theirs.
No, Pasko's theory goes way beyond the costume redesigns with the relaunch and it's only a theory, but he brings up some very interesting topics.Comment

Okay. I'm gonna come out and say it: I love most of Gary Frank's work, but THAT piece just SUCKS!
Superman has become, by and large, a pale shadow of the character he once was, no longer an American Icon, more like a Corporate Idiot. Thanks DC, and all the lawyers involved, for doing what all the Kryptonite in the past has been unable to do: killing Superman. This character is now dead to me....sigpic Oh then, what's this? I whole-heartedly agree with this...
I've TRIED to get on board with the DCnU Superman but I quickly dropped Perez's "Superman" and I'm having a hard time with Morrison's "Action Comics". It still doesn't read like Superman to me...It's been pretty pointless so far and I'm not sure I can hang on for the first 12 issue arc...
Superman has once again become a joke...as Batman said in "Infinite Crisis"

I will also admit that I don't care much for the Frank piece, and I am a fan of his work. Superman looks like he's thinking "Okay, I can do this, I can fly! Don't look down, don't look down...CRAP! I looked down. It's okay, just keep going..."
After all the trouble Clark had flying for 10 years, you'd think he'd have the hang of it by now!!!

I miss the trunks, spit curl and even the yellow belt. Yeah, I like Franks' work, but the cover looks more like his Superboy from Secret Origins and doesn't look like Welling at all. If DC is going to do After Smallville, the art needs to resemble the actors, even on variant covers.
I hope I live long enough for the trunks and spit curl to return with another relaunch.
As far as the stories in Action and Superman, they've been fine in my opinion. But there's nothing great about them and they aren't that terribly different from what has come before. The reworking of Brianiac doesn't go as far as Wolfman's did in the early to mid 80s or as Byrne's version in his revamp. The changes in the Daily Planet remind me of the shake-up Schwartz did when he took over from Weissinger in the early 70s, except this time Lois moved to TV instead of Clark.
What really chaps me about the Superman relaunch is that the content of the stories really hasn't changed that much other than the fact that Lois and Clark aren't married, but as others have stated by changing the look of Superman, the character has become more generic and less iconic.
As silly as the red shorts may seem to some, having that splash of red in the middle balances the costume. The all blue look just seems unfinished to me.
It will be interesting to see if the new look is imposed on JMS' Superman Earth One. I'm guessing it will be.Comment

The red underwear is officially reserved. Saved for Earth 2 Superman to wear this Summer!! The real Superman will be back!!! (maybe?)
I really hoping that the DC reboot universe turns up to be on Earth 9 and the books we were reading before the reboot will come back. I can only hope. Not that I hate the rebooted universe but anything is possible with the multi-universe.
I hate that Roy Harper and Dick Grayson never were Speedy and Robin in this new rebooted Universe. Sucks! This five years time thing isn't enough time for Batman and all these Robin origins. Aaaaghhh!
Has anyone noticed that this new rebooted Superman is wearing Earth 2 Superman's "S" logo? Why that was done is beyond me.Last edited by Cosmicman; Feb 10, '12, 12:44 PM.More custom Mego madness on Facebook right here...
