    Smallville Season 11...The Comic

Superman Homepage - News: February 9, 2012: Season 11 Comes to Comic Books

Now, look closely at this image:

Notice anything missing? Anything that was on the super-suit when we breifly saw it in Season 10? I don't know, maybe TRUNKS?

It's official; DC has retconned the shorts out of every iteration of Superman.

73 years of red trunks and now all-of-a-sudden they don't make sense anymore...

And what is the point of doing a "Season 11" in comic book form anyway? The TV series told the story that they were supposed to tell...Now move on.

I don't mind the comic. I think it's actually a good idea, and besides Whedon did it with Buffy (which was Smallville's model in many ways). But Clark had the trunks on at the end of Season 10 (or at least his CGI equivalent did!), so he must have ditched them in the interim 6 months.

I wasn't really joking about the trunks. I think DC really has vetoed them from existence. I wonder if they'll color-edit them out of reprints?

I'm inclined to agree with The Toyroom on this one, fellow Chris.

There is no real reason for a Smallville Season 11 comic. The last episode of Smallville gave fans the closure they wanted (by seeing Welling in the suit, albeit briefly and from far away) and, more importantly, it ended the show pretty nicely (not gonna say how in case there are folks here who haven't seen it and are still planning on watching it at some point) and it successfully wrapped up the "Smallville" portion of Clark's life.

Doing a Season 11 book is basically what I view as an attempt to wring a bit more milk from the teat of Superman by DC/Warner Bros. and is a way of furthering their "trunkless" agenda for whatever reason.

Season Eight of Buffy was another matter altogether. BUFFY, the show, ended on a fairly open note, leaving the road wide open for a myriad of paths for the characters to take. Now, I'm a huge Buffy fan and while I enjoyed Season Eight, I still thought Whedon made some unusual (and in some cases downright disappointing) choices as to how that season played out (although I was really jazzed that he found a way to get Buffy and Fray together!).
sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.

I don't see this any different than the thousands of Star Trek and Star Wars novels and comics that have continued on past the shows and movies. Most of the Trek series (except TOS) had pretty good endings, yet more stories were told.

Some would argue Smallville should have began where it ended, so this comic will give those fans the Smallville versions of the characters filling out their more traditional DCU roles.

They should have re-branded it to Metropolis like many of the fans wanted with the actual TV series or maybe After Smallville to play off their Before Watchmen line.

I liked the series and really have no problem with them continuing it, even under the old name, although it doesn't make sense other than brand noteriety. But, is there a market for it?

Probably just a of trial balloon for digital-first publishing. I didn't see the price point for the weekly installments.

I'm usually okay with these kind of tie ins when they involve talent from the original production writing it. You want to hope that this kind of thing will bring in folks who watch the show but don't read comics. I can't help but see that as a potential positive even if I'm not really that inclined to pick this up myself, even being a moderate Smallville fan.

Buffy Season 8 was certainly a huge gateway to get a very different age and demographic into the comic shops. May comic shops reported a huge surge in new customers coming in looking for the Buffy comic. Whether or not the shops were able to keep these new readers however, is down to the individual stores.
