Is the more serious tone of the new Spidey flick...

    ....indirectly influenced by Christopher Nolan?

Garfield's Spidey looks much more serious in tone than the Maguire's Spidey flicks...although I can still see from the trailers...that he will indeed be cracking some jokes (like in the cab scene).

    Thoughts?

P.S. Sorry about yet another Spidey thread...but I think this warranted a stand alone thread.

this is really hard to judge from a 3 minute trailer. I'll wait till the movie is out to see if its taking its cues from the big moneymaker Dark Knight. If it were, you'd think it would have went with a more down to earth villain.

Well one thing Emeraldknight caught this morning was how DARK every scene was. Is Spidey now just a nocturnal hero? With the rubber suit he's wearing, it's going to be hard to shoot him in daylight if your trying to sell it as just tights. Spider-man has hardly been just a creature of the night. So I thought that was a good catch. And possibly that is where your picking up on the somber mood of the film Hec.

Could be the Nolan influence. As successful as the previous Spider-Man flicks have been, as big as the Iron Man franchise has been, Chris Nolan has made the most successful comic adaptation. The Ultimate storyline overall is "darker" than the early Spidey comics, although Ditko worked to evoke an eerie mood in the early days of the strip.

        Edited to add:

I just noticed the word "BEGINS" on the screen to itself. Hmmm....I think someone is thinking Nolan here.

I gotta admit the new trailer really looks good, way better than expected. I think the lack of daylight shots might be them tweaking the FX a bit before showing us the goods. I'm sure there's some adjustments going on as we speak. And, we saw a tail on Lizard. The snout is still absent in these shots. It's like a reptillian mullet, Sleestak in the front, raptor in the back.

I don't think they'd go with a script that didn't consider that to some degree - I think it's inevitable that all movies being made are going to be chasing after whatever was most recently the biggest success.

As MIB41 noted, I did mention to him the utter lack of any daytime shots of either SMINO or The Lizard (except for the one left over shot from the previous teaser where you see SMINO getting ready to land on the building). I think that this movie going to camouflage A LOT by using both darkness and rain (a special effects persons' best friend since it can hide a thousand sins). You may see SMINO during the day during the film, but it's very unlikely you'll ever see The Lizard in either daylight or a well-lit room.

As to whether or not Nolan's influence is felt on this incarnation of Spider-Man, I think the only answer could be "yes." But Nolan's shadow has fallen long 'cross many a "super-hero" flick of late, grounding them all far more in reality and less in the realm of the fantastic, which is both a blessing and curse, for without the fantastic, without the FUN, what purpose is there in seeing a hero movie? I mean, I know A LOT of you here are HUGE fans of TDK, but can you honestly review it and say that it was a "fun" super-hero movie?

IRON MAN was very dark in it's first 45 minutes, but it came out of it in the end to become a fun movie.

I never picked up a single issue of Ultimate Spider-Man, and from the artwork that Samurai's been posting in various threads, I know why (never a big fan of Bagley---a little too over-rated IMHO). I'm afraid I'm just an old-fart, Spider-Man purist and Spider-Man, whilst he's had his brooding moments, has never been as dark as Batman nor should he be pigeonholed into that darkness as it's an unnatural fit for the character.

sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.

Yes! Which is one of the reasons this project bothers me so much. Movie productions that choose to follow rather than lead, rarely leave a favorable impression.

Here's what Andrew Garfield had to say about the film:

"We haven't gone with 'darker', we've gone with grounded, more realistic. If we go 'darker' then we're Batman. You know, he's still a teenager, having fun and pi$$in' around."

I don't know about "darker. I do know that I'm loving Denis Leary as Captain Stacy.

I love Denis Leary in pretty much everything he does, so I have no doubts I'll love him in this, too. I just love the "snark" factor he brings to things!

On another note regarding Spider-Man, I read this unsubstantiated report over on COSMIC BOOK NEWS...

Note: This comes from a source we have not used before.

We are told that director Marc Webb will not be back for the Amazing Spider-Man sequel, which is tentatively titled "Web of Spider-Man."

The reason for Marc Webb's departure from "Web of Spider-Man" is that they want a "less dark mopey Spider-Man and more action, action, action Spider-Man next time."

This is why Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci (Transformers, Star Trek) were hired to write the sequel.

And we are told Tarsem Singh is the front-runner to replace Marc Webb.
After reading this, it makes me wonder WHY they would greenlight a Spider-Man film they felt was "dark and mopey" in the first place.

From the footage I'm seeing from AS-M, I, like MIB41, am starting to warm up to it a teensy bit, but I won't say anything more until I've actually seen the thing....

As for the story above, you can read the whole article here...

Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci - it blows me away with these dudes. They've just found this niche for being known to write big budget movies with super-quick turn around times that aren't 100% terrible. That's the state of filmmaking now, it seems. It's amazing when movies have any sense of quality at all.

Also, they hired the guy behind "(500) Days of Summer" and didn't expect something "mopey"? What's wrong with these people?

Having seen the 6 minutes of footage in Imax...I don't think it's really all THAT dark.

This Spider-man is still in highschool right? He's in classes all day. When's he going to fight crime? Saturday afternoon? It would have to be evenings and weekends. The world is often a more dangerous place at night. The perfect time for Superheroes to make their rounds.
