I was a fan of the grim Jim Twilly era.
Ostrander himself admits that prior to the soft reboot, and the addition of Flint Henry as a revitalizing artistic influence on him, he was kind of in burnout mode. (also shown in some of the other titles he was writing at that time... Hawk world for example).

That would be my reading experience with Grimjack as well.. For me I was never as captivated by John Gaunt Without Tim Truman on art. Although, this is probably a good chance for me to sit down and read those Grimjack trades sitting in a huge pile, as well as the most recent series. I haven't read grim jack since the nineties. Loved the Munden's bar backup jams.

Judge Dread may be a license that is simply not intended for public consumption on a mass scale. Kind of the same way the Watchmen were received. Of course I blame a lot of that film's lackluster returns on the marketing. Had they advertised it as a concept film instead of a straight superhero piece, I think audiences would have come in with a better expectation. It wasn't a film intended for grandma to bring her little grandsons to see. Clearly that message was not conveyed. Judge Dread may suffer the same fate.

I don't know how Karl Urban can be puny as Dredd. His previous roles in Riddick & Eyomer in Lord of the Rings he was totally decked out in armor, fighting with spears and beating the krap outta people. I couldn't see him playing Dr. McCoy in Star Trek 2009 because I thought he was too bulky to play a simple country doctor. I think if there's a problem here it's in the costuming dept. Stallone's costume seems less armored than Urbans, (because we all know how much Sly hates wearing plastic).

Urban might be great in the role... we'll have to wait and see.

But the new movie's Judge costume design and Lawmaster still seem somewhat toned down to me.

They're obviously going for a more functional, less stylized approach this time.

I'd have preferred something closer to the comics.

But I guess I'll reserve final judgement until I've seen it all in action.

            >I was a fan of the grim Jim Twilly era.

Me too.... he was as cool, but different. I'm glad they're looking at doing more Twilley stories.

            >Ostrander himself admits that prior to the soft reboot, and the addition of Flint Henry as a revitalizing artistic influence on him, he was kind of in burnout mode.

Tying into my previous rant, you can see it. The hazard of vision is that eventually you realize it. I think wrapping up the the big to-do with the TDP was his ultimate goal. After that it took a while to find a new angle.

            >For me I was never as captivated by John Gaunt Without Tim Truman on art.

Yeah; I agree. There3 was an earthiness that the guys afterwards couldn't muster.

            >as well as the most recent series.

They're very good.... to the point I wonder if Ostrander had them planned to some degree way back at the beginning.

            > Lawmaster still seem somewhat toned down

It looks like a prop from "Megaforce 2."

            >I'd have preferred something closer to the comics.

Me too; 'specially since these guys have managed it so well:

It reads campy as all get out. I can't buy into it. If I saw him on the street I couldn't take him serious... in any reality.

                    Hmmmm....

Still "meh." It looks WAY too much like everything else. Didn't the SciFi version of the Phantom wear that same outfit?
