The Lone Ranger starts principle photography in February

Should be a fascinating film. Nice to see an old school hero given a new treatment with a big budget film. I think it has all the right elements to be a big hit. I think the film will have a nice blend of action and some humor that quite honestly will help sell the believability of the concept. All good films have that component and the Lone Ranger will be no exception.

I'm still on the fence on this. It could be a great fun movie, or it could be a colossal train wreck. I think Gore Vebenski and Depp are talented folks, I just hope their view isn't too askew on the Ranger himself.

It is a new Lone Ranger film, so good or bad I am on board.

No one will ever top Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels but it would be nice to see this classic hero get his due in the modern era.

^Agreed. "The Legend of the Lone Ranger" had almost everything right, except the lead, and the timing. I doubt this version will be as reverential as that movie, though.

As long as it looks classic, I'm in......there was a tv movie a few years ago that was horrible....

I like that movie. I'm still hoping for a widescreen DVD release of it. I think it's better than a lot of people give it credit for.

On the new movie, I'm personally not too keen on Depp as Tonto.
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

Johnny Depp is a chameleon....I can see him tackling just about any role, so I'm not too worried with Tonto

I agree. Depp is a character actor, which lends to his credibility in any roll.

I read that Depp and the director were aiming for a humorous take where Tonto was the brains and the Ranger somewhat of a dim bulb, used by Tonto as his front man because Indians/native Americans weren't treated as citizens and didn't have access to the "white man's" society.

I hope it was a bad rumor or joke. I think Depp would be a great Tonto, but I'm not really interested in a film where the Rangers it the target of jokes.

Saturday Night Live skit, sure, but not a $120 million movie.

If they are going down the humorous road, stick to a Lethal Weapon formula in which both characters are equally adept and flawed.

I think MIB41 told me the werewolves got axed due to budgetary constraints. Which doesn't phase me too much because I've never really seen The Lone Ranger as a character who would take on supernatural creatures; he's a more rooted in reality pulp hero than almost any other ones out there, so bringing an element of the fantastic into it would wind up, IMHO, putting it right up there with the big screen version of THE WILD, WILD WEST....
sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.

That would be a big affirmative Emeraldknight. But the film is still going to run about $210 million. I think people unfamiliar with director Verbinski's approach are scratching their heads as to how a western can cost this much. Well alot of that investment will not be towards creating CGI characters so much as creating environment. And lets be honest. The Lone Ranger fighting the old West is not anymore fantastic than Batman fighting modern criminals. But Verbinski wants the world of the Lone Ranger to possess everything you've ever associated with that theme. So it will have a story book environment that feels hyper real. Just like the character. He will examine all of the myths and legends of the old west and Indians just as he did pirates. I'm expecting a fantastic film.
