    A question for the barbers!

Wolverine, the Beast, and Dagwood Bumstead all have the same haircut. In fact, there are more comic characters with this 'do than actual people, I'm guessing. Has anyone here ever seen someone with this as their regular style in real life? What is it called?

EDIT: Also, why does this seem appealing to Marvel, while I can't think of any DC characters with it?

Vixen had that hairdo, with dreads hanging from the bottom, back in the 80s during the Detroit League era.

Hair doesn't naturally do that; once it got long enough for points it'd fall.

I always assumed that Wolverine got that crazy hair-do to make him more recognizable when he wasn't wearing his pointy cowl. I've never seen anyone with that hair (not including comic conventions) and I think I almost died of laughter the first time I saw Hugh Jackman in it:

After some research, it seems the style has shades of a real 50s hair style called the Duck Tail:

            >to make him more recognizable when he wasn't wearing his pointy cowl

No doubt. Clarity is important with comic art, and it serves the same purpose tights and a cape do: to let you know where the character is in the panel, no matter how tired, drunk or apathetic the artist. Plus; Wolverine was originally supposed to be a mutant animal, and the idea might have been kicking around from that to give him odd hair. Fur COULD bunch up like that normally 'cos it's more coarse and rigid than hair.

            >I've never seen anyone with that hair

You HAVE.... but you might not remember. Click my link.

Good call Don - it's like a 80s Flock of Seagulls meets 50s greaser thing. A pretty gross mix - if you asked me.

There was an episode of Leave it to Beaver in which Wally got a haircut called a jellyroll that was someplace in between Curtis' cut and jackman's.

I totally forgot about Timberwolf. In fact, I used to think Wolverine was kind of a Timberwolf rip-off, until I started reading X-Men back in the Byrne/Austin days. Even their orange and brown costumes are a bit similar.

There is a lot of cross-polination between the 70s Legion and the "New" X-Men. Dave Cockrum took many of his unused Legion designs over to Marvel and gave them to the X-Men, including a fully realized Nightcrawler and Storm's costume (more or less). And of course then Claremont and Cockrum did their own Legion with The Imperial Guard in X-Men. Wolverine adopted the costume of Fang for a time, and I believe Cockrum originally designed it to be used on Timber Wolf.
