I think Miller wrote some dialogue in Dark Knight where Gordon covers his tracks by saying to a reporter he turns on the Bat-Signal to scare criminals. It makes them nervous and they mess up and get caught. That was probably the last high point of Miller's career except for Batman Year One.

Gordon needs the Bat-Signal, because if he calls him on the Bat-Cell, he won't be able to understand his growling! Just see that SNL skit with Steve Buscemi from a few weeks back.

But seriously, the Bat-Signal is definitely an iconic element of Batman that still packs a punch. Both the DCU Batman Legacy figures and the current Brave and the Bold figures have the Bat-Signal on the package.

        Hmmmm....

I think that's why the second-last Batman cartoon used the "Bat-Wave" signaller.

The Bat-Signal is as timeless as Batman himself.

plus it gives Chief O'Hara something to do besides not catching criminals.

Or likely quaffing cheap, Irish whiskey to help him wrap his head around the fact that there are frequently two guys in wierd costumes in the PC's office; one who's just a smidgeon overweight, dresses kinda like a bat and. speaks. with. an. odd. style and a full grown man wearing a yellow cape plus green booties and man-shorts!!!!

I thought Chief O'Haras job was just to come up with Begoras (Whatever that is) and excuses on why they need Batman ad Robin. LOL
