Defenders 2007 - what a fun read

I'm a huge Kevin Maguire fan and I adored JLI. THis is more of the same kind of storytelling and humor and was perfect for me. It's a collected trade from the five issue mini and focuses on three of the four original Defenders. If there are any Silver Surfer fans, please stay away form this book. He's a little bit disrespected in a funny, mellow sort of way.

Namor absolutely shines here as the arrogant, pompous jackass. He's kind of like the Rock from WWE, a jerk that you like. There's a lot of dialogue, banter and exposition here, but that's to be expected from the creative team. This book really is of little consequence in the overall grand scheme of things, but it was a joy to read.

Very funny story. I liked the Surfer learning the ways of cosmic understanding from the surfer dudes.

I got a set of the comics up for sale in marketplace. Cheap plug.

I really liked this series and was hoping that the Giffen/dematties/maguire team would do a follow up.

The big strength was that they gave each character such distinctive personalities, and Maguire's ability to convey that through his expressions anybody language. Putting them in a room together, the sparks are going to fly.

This wasn't Kevin Maguire's first stint on The Defenders either. He did The Hulk portion of the Return of the Defenders crossing over into the annuals of their respective ongoing titles after hs rub on JLI.

Even more than his expressive faces, his layouts are amazing. He actually used a 16 panel page to further a conversation. You think any if these modern Image worshipping artists can pull that off? Much like Perez, you don't need word balloons to know what's going on. He's not just a great artist, he's a storyteller.

Also hugely underrated series.


I loves me my Brubaker gritty Cap and Bucky, but this had such a great retro feel to it. In JLI, YOU FELT LIKE HE WAS STILL OFTEN LEARNING THE ROPES, BUT DESPITE THE HUGE DELAYS on this series, going off the monthly grind really allowed Maguire to shine. Not sure if this has been collected, but it would be a shame if they didn't for the recent release of the cap movie.
