I've always wondered, did the creators name him Jack Russel as a joke after the Terrier dog breed?

I also wondered the same thing about Oscar Goldman from SMDM...since an Oscar is literally a gold man.

Yeah, I think that was Marvel being a little TOO cute with their naming. It's usually just alliteration, like Peter Parker and Bruce Banner. Can you image if they named the Hulk's alter-ego Hugh Greenman?

Later on, in the crossover with Tomb of Dracula, they explained that Russel is the Americanized name of Russoff, and that Jack's ancestor was cursed by a werewolf that he found in Castle Dracula, after he staked the Count.
