It just occurred to me that there really isn't currently a Captain Marvel in the Marvel U. Other than the recent Mar-Vell Skrull series, obviously designed to keep the copyright intact.
The plan post Invasion was for Marvel Boy to take the mantle, but ended up as The Protector instead (which is as generic a name as you can come up with).
The other obvious candidate is the new Quasar, who is the sister of Mar-Vell and Genis-Vell, who were both Captain Marvel.
I love the Next Wave revamp of the 80's Captain Marvel, but I don't think she ever really should have had the title.
For me, I think it's time Ms Marvel/Carol Danvers became Captain Marvel. She was Mar-Vell's friend and got her powers from him in the first place. "Ms" is also kind of dated... great in the 70's, but not as common today is it? better Captain Marvel than Warbird or Binary. I think she was actually Captain Marvel in the House of M alternate reality.
Rumour has it that Geoff Johns/Gary Frank's new Shazam series might not use the name Captain Marvel.
